My name is Angela Watkins and I'm seeking a review of my self-published short story collection, titled Sunflowers: Surviving Girlhood (2016). The book consists of seven coming-of-age stories about African American girls from different backgrounds, who struggle to establish their identity under difficult circumstances. Some of the more serious stories deal with child abuse, bullying, teen pregnancy, and poverty. This collection gives voice to African American girls and young women, who are often marginalized and silenced. The ISBN is 978-1468187892; the ISBN for the Kindle e-book, published in 2014, is 1468187899. Thank you for your consideration!

The Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival is an annual, cultural arts & music festival that takes place over the course of 10 days in Tampa Bay, Florida. They host an Author Village which I checked out on Saturday and met a bunch of authors. I was only armed with an old cell phone, but I managed to shoot a couple of videos and a bunch of photos.

A black avant-garde composer from Britain turns outlaw in Los Angeles. She flouts a California law which dulls people’s minds by requiring four daily hours of screen-watching. In L.A., Angelica Morgan finds an audience and also, unexpectedly, love, a prison sentence, and a passion to stop the insidious law from taking hold in Britain. “If I am so much of a slut, why don’t you keep your husband out of my bed?” —Delores E. Jordan That quote is from Michael Jordan's sister (yes the basketball great). You can read the rest of the except here. Now this is from a Jordan's memoir that was published in 2001, but I never knew that Jordan's father, who was subsequently murdered (presumably in an unrelated incident), took the virginity of his own daughter and continued to abuse her for years! I have no idea how I missed that story! I was just adding information to the site about Jordan's mother who is an accomplished children's book author whose books have been illustrated b…

I bet there were a few of you yesterday, not all but a few, thinking: who the heck is this new dope begging for a free book review, posting mushy quotes with bad grammar, and talking about the importance of black women. Answer? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Noooo? Ugh… fine, I’ll answer the freakin question myself, thank you very much. My name is Domovoi Elias Eliot. I’m a writer. Not inspiring. Just a writer (an author if you’re nasty). Truth is I’m no different than Tayari Jones, or Toni Morrison, or Ta-Nehisi Coates except they know Oprah and they are New York Times Bestsellers and I’m quite sure they’re better writers than I am but besides that there is truly no differenc…

Yes I know many webmasters have plenty of gripes about Google's search results -- all of whom feel their site's should ranks #1 in search results. Back in the spring of this year I noticed AALBC, which always performed very well on these search terms; "African American Books" and "African American Literature" (without the quotes) started to creep down the search engine ranking and is now getting clobbered on these terms. On a test I ran, just now, using incognito mode on Chrome browser, AALBC was on the third page of search results for African American Books -- effectively undiscoverable for a search on that term! I have never seen AALBC this far back in the…

Before Podcasts, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and countless other outlets there were Black newspapers, magazines, and books to document our history. During the early days of segregation, they banned the Chicago Defender in the South! Now they want to whitewash history. The role of Black literature regardless of format is to preserve our incredible story for future generations. We need to tell the story our way. An African Proverb “Until the lion tells the story, the hunter will always be the hero.”

This is basically a response to some of the questions to the first part of the series. As Brotha Troy asked: what is the answer? I sincerely feel that a part to the solution will come when we take control of our image. It is important that we regain our platform to control the images of us that is presented to the world. As Brotha Troy mentioned we are losing these platforms at an alarming rate and since we do not control our image, it is easy for the white media to paint us in a negative light. If you will recall when BET was sold, the first casualty was Ed Gordon and BET news. Once the news segment was destroyed, nothing remained other than the entertainment porti…

While Black architects produce extraordinary works, they account for only two percent of the profession in the United States. Many of their works exist in the Black community and have helped preserve and restore history and culture. Though architecture is often not associated with Black Culture, it is an integral aspect in defining a community and requires careful consideration of design, context, and resident relationships. This book explores over forty works by Black architects and their impact in the Black community. A wide variety of projects are featured, from residences of affluent African Americans, to historic churches, to memorials and museums of Blac…

Hello Folks, Cynique here. I’m sure you’ll agree that hardly a day goes by without some occurrence or phenomenon jolting people into believing that the world is on a collision course with its final reckoning. The economy, the weather, wars, famine. What next? What does the future hold? Well, while we’re waiting to see, you might want to check out a book of mine that’s on its way. The urban contemporary romance novel I’m unleashing on the world is entitled “The Only One”, and its plot revolves around the familiar dilemma single “sistas” face when accesss to romantic prospects is frozen out by a flurry of “snowflakes”. The “black babe/white chick/black dude” tr…

This all started after my husband’s beloved mother died mid-September 2013. His niece graciously arranged for us to stay in a three story condo in Cape Charles, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The condo was wonderfully decorated to represent an oceanic theme—huge seashells, pictured images of magnificent sea creatures, and sea ornaments, purposefully arranged to reflect life in the nearby Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. However, with all the wonderful décor, there was one piece in particular that captured my attention. It was a framed painting of a mermaid displayed in the master bedroom, titled Metamorphosis by Sheila Wolk. Her beauty captivated me to the point wher…

I am seeking a review for my upcoming Oct 1, 2016 release, PLACES IN MY HEART, a contemporary romance. Omar Drummond is a pro football superstar with a body that’s a pure work of art. But Morgan Gray is forbidden to act on their chemistry, or repeat their impulsive kiss. Proving her worth as a sports agent means securing the notorious celebrity as a client, not a lover. Yet between flowers, sweet notes and heady hotel interludes, Omar is shamelessly seducing her... Other agents—and exes—have tried using Omar as a meal ticket, and he’s closed himself off from emotional entanglements. With Morgan, it’s a whole new playbook.…

Rachel Renée Russell’s DORK DIARIES children’s books series has sold over 30 million copies with translation into 36 languages worldwide 222 weeks on the New York Times bestsellers list. The Dork Diaries is a fantastically successful series. The main characters are not Black. Rachel said in an interview with The New York Times that she wanted her books to appeal to a wide audience. Would it really be impossible for a Black main character to appeal to a wide (i.e. white) audience?

A bit extreme, because many Black people do read. However, I would concede most don't. But this is true of ALL people. People are informed, but they are, in my opinion, are informed about things that don't matter very much. Again, this is not just limited to Black people. Our problem is that we, with a few hundred years of oppression in America, can't afford to be so uninformed. We really do need to work twice as hard just to catch up. My laptop crashed today, I've spent hours trying to get it to boot and im tired...

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But this one sure hits close to home. My mentor wrote an article in 2009 about how black athletes should leave white schools and go to HBCUs. Jemele Hill wrote an article in the Atlantic last week with MANY of the same ideas. https://operation-nation.com/jemele-hill-article-in-the-atlantic-dangerously-close-to-plagiarism/ I never particularly cared for this woman. She represent the absolute limit white media will allow an unfiltered black voice. But then she turns around and promotes all that toxic feminism stuff that aims to divide black men and women. Judge for yourself. BTW, thank…

People collectively are just beautiful. These are just some of the authors I've added to the site in the last 25 days. Some are paid clients, others are winners of major awards. The question has come up about what i do other than write. To be honest, I have made an effort to get my message out in front of the masses. Have you ever heard or read about the pact between the three brothas who made a pact to become doctors. Well, this is a story about a dozen ex-bank-robbers who made a similar pact. In the 70s we were responsible for all of the bank robberies in my hometown, dozens of them. When I first started robbing banks, I intended to use that money to buy "supplies" for the freedom fighters in Africa who were fighting to gain independence from colonial rulers. I also was doing my part to fund the black revolution that was brewing in this c…
