  2. WFT? Jerry Craft has been publishing humorous comics and graphics novels, longer than I have been running AALBC -- almost 30 years. In the last few years Jerry has "Blown Up" winning major awards and selling a bazillion books. It has been great to witness his hard work and diligence pay off. Craft's story is truly the "American Dream." This aspect of his story has been completely obscured. The idea that his books would be banned over the controversy surrounding critical race theory is absurd. None of the news articles I've read addressed this issue in a substantive, or nuanced manner; they are just playing up the controversy. It …

TRUTH TO THE GAME In what was Conversations’ first “jailhouse” interview, it was an honor to talk with bestselling author DAMON “AMIN” MEADOWS, the co-author (along with bestselling author JASON POOLE) of one of the most controversial novels I have ever read: CONVICT’S CANDY. After reading a book that intense, it was an honor to get the opportunity to speak with the author about the inspiration of the book, as well as why he felt it was important to tell the story of Candy. My name is RaShawn Allen and I have recently just finished one of the most fascinating stories a couple days ago. It is not popular nor has a large following, yet I have never read another book like it. I may be the only one who thinks it, but this novel takes an incredible approach to highlight many of the issues associated with the living conditions of Blacks in America. It uses intricate themes while also telling a compelling coming of Age story. I would love for others to read and review this novel, since I may be impartial because a friend of mine wrote it. The title is called "The Canton Greats" by Ronald Jermaine Love. The ISBN is 9781086657548. The publication dat…

Good morning readers and writers, I have a terrible bellyache this morning. I had one of my books reviewed by Kirkus, and received my review today. The problem was not that I received a bad review, the reviewer stated it was, "A richly textured, affecting tale of a family’s resilience in the face of injustice." My issue is that she referred to a historical fiction book about slavery and the aftermath in one family as a soap opera. In my mind, the black experience is not a Life Time movie and can never be described as a "soap opera." I don't have the words to express my feelings, insulted doesn't quite hit it. I would love to have some black readers review my book. It's ti…

In Book Publishing, Less Is The New More by Michael Levin The hottest book publishing trend today: less is the new more. “The first time I saw a 73-page ‘book’ offered on Amazon, I was outraged,” says New York Times best selling author Michael Levin. “But I thought about how shredded the American attention span is. And I felt like Cortez staring at the Pacific.” The trend in books today, Harry Potter notwithstanding, is toward books so short that in the past no self-respecting publisher—or author—would even have called them books. But today, shortened attention spans call for shorter books. Levin blames smartphones and social media for what he calls “a w…

AALBC.com is continuing to expand. We are just a few months away from providing book printing services. I'm excited about this because this is one of the final pieces needed to becoming a full service publisher. The other great thing is that I'm working with an established Black owned printer who is producing a quality products at competitive prices. I'm setting up the website now (which is slowing up the AALBC.com upgrade, but it is worth the effort). I also plan on publishing great books that agents can't find publishers for, I'm about a year away from this, but there's some great potential here that I can't wait to begin working on.

It was inspired by the ancient Kingdom of Kush, migration, the Sao civilization, and the fall of Meroë. Of Captivity & Kings captures a variety of characters involved in the luxury trade, the growing desert climate, religious persecution, and a rising slave trade in 4th Century Africa. I’ve posted some of the information below as well as a brief synopsis and would love to be considered for AALBC’s book review! Thank you in advance for your consideration. We assume that our closest friends will be around forever. Sometimes we let years pass without checking in, confident that our paths will cross eventually and that the connection we once had will still be there. However, life doesn’t always work like that. After learning of the death of her childhood friend Jewel, Camille is overwhelmed by memories. As young women, Camille, Jewel, and Saundra formed a close bond—however, careers, love lives, and other circumstances conspired to separate the once-devoted trio. Jewel founded a successful black entertainment agency, and Saundra fell into an abusive relationship. Camille drifted away after the birth of her son. Wh…

I was first introduced to Gayl's work when @Thumper selected her novel, Eva’s Man for our book club's reading list back in 1998. I read the explanation, just this morning, -- holy cow! I was expecting some Jimmy Baldwin type reason. I also read the source NY Times article which provided the gory details.

In the pece poet Gregory Pardlo is quoted as saying, "...the futility of defining a community according to nation and race -- constructs the global intellectual community increasingly recognizes as irrational at best, counterproductive at worst." I agree completely with the spirit of Gregory's statement, as some may surmise given my recent rants on our preoccupation with the artifical construct of race. Most recently I took issue with Wikipedia's citation for the African-American author Zane. This is not just a mental exercise. I believe the nature of some of Wikipedia's entries, as in the example below, actually hurts Black people. The real travesty however is the fact that Google has evaluated Wikipedia's website by, giving it disproportionate exposure and influence by ranking it at the top of countless search results, regar…
