Five Stars October 9, 2024 I never thought I would be reading a Hallmark special made novel in October. I’m not a pumpkin spice type of guy but I found that I really enjoyed it. It is a contemporary family story set around the sea islands during Christmas. I found the family dynamic real and the romance touching. The food descriptions were a bonus and for me(as a foodie) the MVP in the story. I’m ready for the sequel. - David Hankerson, Goodreads review Preorder A Palmetto Christmas today from MVmedia and anywhere books are sold. Release date: November 29, 2024. ISBN no.: 979-8990512009

The Association for the Study of African American Life and History just published Carter G. Woodson’s Appeal: A Lost Manuscript, this past December. This interesting thing is that I was unfamiliar with this organization and this book before this morning. An authors I recently profiled on AALBC.com Casey Curry mention she was doing the ASALH event in D.C. this weekend. I try to keep track of all the big event related to Black books, so I looked up the event, learned about the organization and discovered this book. Because I heard absolutely nothing about this apparently recently discovered book from anyone. I began to doubt if it was even a new discovery, o…

Peace & GHETTOHEAT®! What’s good, worldwide? :0) Allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is #HICKSON, & baby, I’m most definitely like no other: I’m Black Excellence! While homeless, seriously struggling spiritually, financially & emotionally with major issues, personally & professionally (quitting the fashion industry the day before 9/11), I’d created an extraordinary, independent publishing company in the process on June 4, 2003, & wrote an amazing poetry book, also: both produced by happenstance, both titled GHETTOHEAT®! Circumstances forced me to quickly take the streets nationwide by storm, persistently pushing the book & company simultaneousl…

Well Thumpers Corner and the rest of the AALBC.com’s discussion boards can't survive without people to contribute to the conversation. “If the public don’t attach any particular importance to paying for creative work, they’re unlikely to feel a sense of outrage when a company like Huff Post doesn’t attach a great deal of importance to it either.”—James Bloodworth You know when white men start complaining it is REALLY bad. Salon recently interviewed James Bloodworth on this subject which James writes more about in his book The Myth of Meritocracy.

9 Hood Rats As far as it goes, image is the most powerful behavioral mechanism in the ‘hood. There is nothing ambiguous about it. A tough one is indispensable, and when it comes to understanding the human condition in the ‘hood, nothing is more serious. After image, everything else is secondary. In every sense, the deeds of hood rats emerges from their image which is, strictly speaking, a social commentary drawn out of the mYth of their family legend because in ghetto culture, the nature of how you …

I am requesting a free book review to be shared on AALBC media pages. My book, What Does It Profit, became available via Kindle publishing on am*zon in April 2020. Its ISBN is 978-0-9849594-4-0. The paperback version will be available on am*zon.com soon. Its ISBN is 978-0-9849594-3-3. The paperback is 346 pages. In summary: WHAT DOES IT PROFIT The nation could hope again. Americans could trust a presidential candidate once again. Religious zealots believed he was the Messiah. Cynics wanted to grab onto him, someone tangible and greater their own sarcasm. Folks, in between, looked forward to the future with inspiration. They, all, chanted Mal…

Hi there, I am the author of an upcoming children’s book called Ava and Mae Own a Lemonade Stand. This book is created by Black women and centers on two Black sister protagonists that open a lemonade stand. In addition to teaching entrepreneurial language and promoting perseverance, this book increases diversity in children’s literature. There are very few examples in children’s literature of Black girls owning and running their own business. It is important for racial and economic justice that Black children have pop culture examples of people who look like them in strong entrepreneurial roles. The primary target age for this book is 6-9 years o…

Hi Everyone, I would like to invite reviews of my recently published novella A Man and His Wife. Author: Ronald A. Kuykendall ISBN: 9798201472696 Publication date: August 12, 2022 Format: ebook Description: This is the remarkable story of a consensual, loving, respectful, romance between Leon and Marie Louise, an enslaved man and enslaved woman, whose slave marriage survived under the brutal conditions of slavery. "Their world of slavery, though harsh and cruel, was no impediment to their love, affection, and devotion to one another; their marriage was their priority, and not even slavery could change that." However, when a plan to sel…

Well, Troy, in response to your inquiry as to why Thumper's Corner is on life support, I believe the reason has to do with the bulk of its membership being composed of lurkers who apparently don’t like to debate. They, perhaps, want to express an opinion but not to argue with someone who challenges it because this takes them out of their comfort zone. Re-hashing the same ol boring issues also probably figures into the ongoing malaise. And instigating crazy, funny, threads also seems to have lost its effectiveness because having a sense of humor is no longer a trait that can be taken for granted when it comes to posters. A forum is, after all, an arena for an ex…

The naughty little fantasy of a white suburban house wife, coninues to pay off as the "50 Shades of Gray" series maintains its bestseller status. Also entering the list of top sellers is a mainstream book by the author of the Harry Potter's series. It's not enough that she made a billion dollars writing about a bespeckled boy wizard, now she's cleaning up with a novel about a bunch of odd balls. There just aint no justice in this world. Year, after year, authors like Stephen King, John Grisham, Mary Higgins Clark, Dannielle Steele, Sue Grafton, James Patterson, just to name a few, come out with a book that their fans snap up. What do black folks get? A obligatory…

...of course we have all heard this story before. It was recently covered in my hometown newspaper, the New York Post with a title reflecting the sensibilities of New Yorkers, "My year of terror and abuse teaching at a NYC high school." The article goes on to relate; In 2008, in a fit of idealism, Ed Boland, a well-off New Yorker who had spent 20 years as an executive at a nonprofit, had a midlife epiphany: He should leave his white-glove world, the galas at the Waldorf and drinks at the Yale Club, and go work with the city’s neediest children. In the end, Boland isn't hoisted on his students' shoulders and no one passes AP anything. This is no…

Seeking a book review from AALBC (and any interested readers). My audiobook, Sex, Race, and Robots - How to be Human in the Age of AI, is narrated by Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give) and is an exploration of how the tech world’s racial biases are infecting the next generation of Artificial Intelligence, with profoundly negative effects for humans of all genders and races. The danger of bias in our AI-powered machines has never been greater. Governments are using supercomputers to track COVID-19 patients. AI is being employed to monitor Black Lives Matter protests. Voice recognition systems have been rolled out that can’t hear female voices. This book deliver…

I regularly visit Black-owned books stores, not so much in the past year for obvious reasons, but in one store I noticed this book; an autographed copy of Obama's memoir, Promised Land. This version retails for $350 but I doubt you'll find a copy selling for that much. I've seen the book priced at $1,000 or more. Copies with the signature page removed are selling for $150. The crazy thing is that I was not aware of the book prior too seeing it in the store. The bookseller of the store I saw it in (I'm deliberately not naming the store) told me the publisher only offered him two copies. I don't how many were produced or what book stores got co…

By the end of the fifth paragraph I thought to myself what the ceo of paramount said about getting rid of simon and schuster. Paramount/viacom/cbs/the redstone empire is a video company. I never forgot years ago I read Ivanhoe from walter scott and I recall years after someone saying, that book is too slow at times. I see a connection between video as the modern communication format and the impetus from crude criminals. In the third paragraph Thanos of the marvel movies is mentioned and he encapsulates my reasoning to using the term crude criminals over antagonist. A crude criminal is an antagonist, as some one who injures another rawly. But the crude…
