It seems to me that there is a contemporary wave of black satire, drawing from the well of Invisible Man (Ralph Ellison's) and updating it to today. We Cast A Shadow (Maurice Carlos Ruffins) opens as strongly as the Battle Royale complete with humiliation, nudity, and horrifying racial dependencies. The Sellout had all the cadencies of contemporary speech and today's pace with unexpected (seemingly stream of consciousness) scenarios and pitch-perfect class divisions. Both authors were able to sustain these narrators for the entire novels. Do you know of others doing this kind of work? I read really widely--histories to fiction to memoirs and across continents.…

@Edwina Louise DorchSomething else comes to mind in reference to the book you shared, and the question that was asked. 'The book asks the question - Who do you love? or What is the color of the person that you love? First, I chose to start another topic because I didn't want to interfere with the purpose of your entry, but the question of Love, provoked an observation about Four Letter Words, so thank you for igniting my thoughts. Some four-letter words have lost their power, while other four-letter words have gained strength. Take the four-letter word LOVE, for example, the word love used to have a powerful emotional connection to the…

I did not know Maya, but over the years in the course of doing what I do our paths would cross from time to time. During each encounter I always found her personable and down to earth. When this picture was taken she owned a Brownstone around the corner from me. The last time I saw Maya was at the during the last National Book Awards where she was awarded the 2013 Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community. I did not have an opportunity to speak to here then. AALBC.com mourns the passing, this morning (May 28, 2014), of world renowned poet, author, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou

My debut novel, Mirrors of Life was released in August of 2019. It's the tale of a young African-American mother who is determined to break the family-cycle of generational welfare and guides her children to avoid the pitfalls of their hardship environment and leap over the systematic roadblocks that confine many to juvenile delinquency. This compelling tale of faith and perseverance leads to intrigue when her spiritually inclined and ambitious son, Derrick, becomes a venture capitalist and attempts to build a civic-minded conglomerate that undercuts the retail and gas prices set by a group of avaricious businessmen led by the narcissistic and callous, Erich …

Subscribe to the Hurston/Wright's YouTube channel. In fact, subscribe to AALBC's channel while you are at it.* *Ya'll know me, I'm not trying to promote YouTube's channel, but subscribers help. YouTube doesn't even count video views unless the video is viewed on YouTube, so if a million people video the video here and 1 person watches it on YouTube will report only one view which signals to people on YouTube that the video is not worth you time. Of course, this creates a strong incentive for video creators to push people to watch videos on YouTube. Some producers even pay for video views. The worst part is YouTube's algorithm favors bas…

1) It stinks 2) It is written in a code--like that of Modern Poetry--that afficinadoes of literary fiction or intellectuals understand but nobody else does. For instace, I was rading a piece called "Homesick Blues" in Terry McMillains groundbreaking 1990 anthology, BREAKING ICE that was my Bible back in the day. The story refers to H. L. Mencken. I know who Mencken is, and knew who he was then, because I was in the lit fiction game. But the average person does not know who James Baldwin was, much less H. L. Mencken. (You think I am overstating the case. I spoke to a very well educated Black woman the other day who was puzzled about the hostility bet…

Diane Cooper was sentenced to 40 Years for crime she didn't commit. Learn about this tragic, but ultimately redemptive and uplifting story in the book which tells her story Dark Justice. I shot this video on this weekend and was already familiar with the book, I thought it was a work of fiction. I did not know it was a true story until I was shooting the video. Basically I about two feet away from The authors whose real name is Pamela, and she say the story if about her. I almost dropped my camera. She was sentenced to 40 years! This was for a crime one might consider a relatively minor offense and with no prior arrests a 40 years sentence (effectiv…

I am seeking reviewers for my historical novel Sedahlia. Sedahlia explores the human cords that bind and the racial lines that divide two families, the Masters and the Lindseys. Readers say Sedahlia is "Earthy", "Hard to put down", "Life in all its layers". Sedahlia is a riveting ride challenging readers to examine race relations both then and now. After fleeing post-Civil War Georgia, John Masters, Sr., his wife Virginia Masters, and their rebellious servant Jessie Lindsey have built new lives in Texas ranch country. Now their offspring, Johnny Masters and Rachel Lindsey, are in love. On the isolated, sprawling Sedahlia ranch, their youth…

What does that mean? During the sixties, the South expelled Black students demonstrating for civil rights. Now, the Republicans demand that the government revoke and expel the visas of any students who speak out to support Hamas or the Palestinians. How about you expel the Nazis marching in the streets? We better pay attention to the students because they will not tolerate bullshit! Is it a stretch to compare the two?

London. What if she pursued her master’s at an English university? Or left Florida to its sun and swamps, and feasted her eyes instead on historic towers set against overcast skies? What if crossing the ocean was the path to a brighter future? Stuck in a dismal job and entangled in a back-and-forth relationship, Adia Kamaria ponders this unexpected idea for quite a while before finally taking the plunge. But when she does, she does so wholeheartedly. Yellow Tulips & Red Buses reads like a journal in its vulnerability and hopeful honesty as it recounts Adia’s romantic escapades—first with a young Pakistani bloke, followed by a Nigerian prince—and traces her t…

Fate of Timbuktu manuscripts uncertain as library burns The fate of tens of thousands ancient manuscripts in Mali remained uncertain Monday as French troops liberated the city of Timbuktu from Islamic insurgents who were said to have set fire to the library there. Timbuktu is the last major city occupied by the insurgents, who have held sway there for 10 months, imposing the strict Islamic version of religious law, including carrying out public executions and amputations for crimes. The city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was an especially vibrant center of Islamic thought in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. As the Guardian explains in a retr…
