Whitney Houston has checked back into rehab. Houston has a problem, and she realizes she needs help. There have been rumors for a while that Houston has been indulging in drugs and alcohol, but now it has been confirmed. Busy week-end, huh? Well, Wills and what's-her-name finally got married in a wedding that all of the network talking heads were gushing over. Me, I didn't think it was all that. Handsome Prince Charming? No. A dork who's losing his hair. A wedding dress that looked "off-the-rack" being worn by an anorexic groupie who got lucky. God Save the Queen, whose wedding outfit made her look like an ad for Agent Orange. Prince Charles has grown so old waiting for his Mum to step down that he looks more like her brother than her son. First TuPac. Then Biggie. Now Osama. Somebody snitched on him and Obama's gang did a drive-by. Look out, Gadhafy. You next, bro. Ame…

The Indiana Pacers were kickin ass but the Chicago Bulls snatched victory from the jaws of defeat! D. Rose is a ZEN Master. After visualizing himself making a basket, he finds the spaces where the defenders aren't, and energizes the image into reality. Oh, yeah. He got skilz. I know, I know. His teammates need to kick it up a notch. And they've got their work cut out for them but I'm just glad I'm still around to to witness another basketball phenom who wears a Chicago uniform. Obama was in town, hoping some of Derrick's magic would rub of off on him as he enlisted his apppearance at fund raisers. Obama couldn't call on Jesse Jackson's help because Jesse is…

Brother Manning Marable just passed away after a long battle with lung complications. He was only 60 years old. But the scholary contributions he made cannot be understated. I, like so many other black Americans, knew little if anything about this brilliant black scholar. Sadly, he did not see the final publication of his meticulously researched and documented biography of Malcolm X (which has just been released). His biography of our Shining Black Prince (given by Ossie Davis) should be at the top of your books to get list. This is one of numerous videos of brother Manny at Democracy Now. (FinalCall.com | 03-11-2011) - Minister Farrakhan blasted Pres. Obama and Secy. Clinton for their arrogance in meddling in another sovereign nation's affairs and publicly recommending regime change. He then instructed Americans to look beneath the surface to see who stands to benefit from the unrest and warned Pres. Obama to be careful of the words coming from advisors lobbying him to move in with military forces to depose Libya leader, Col. Gadhafi.

A funny thing happened on the way to the revolution. Somebody forgot to tell us that, in our rush out the door to join in the riches of the larger society as a result of desegregation, we might want to preserve at least some to the things that made us a self-sustaining community, just in case. Well, with the current high unemployment rates among African-Americans, higher than the nation as a whole, that "just in case" moment may be here. The one thing we may have forgotten to do "just in case"? Mind our own businesses! It’s no surprise that, as times get tough, people tend to look out for their own. Yes, that means a lot of cronyism, a little bit o…

I recently did some work on my family tree, tracing the Howard line on my father's side back to my great grandmother, Pinneta, born a slave in Tarboro County, North Carolina in 1854. In the course of doing this I came to know who my forebears were and to understand the times in which they lived. This on-going quest to uncover the family past has deepened my knowledge of black history and given me a more sophisticated understaning of the complex era in which we live.If anyone is thinking of exploring their family tree I would be happy to give them some pointers.

“Niggers and flies, I do despise. The more I see Niggers, the more I like flies.” --Clarence Thomas, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States This from the brother who succeeded Thurgood Marshall. This quote was obtained from the novel from Clarence's ex girlfriend, Lillian McEwen, who penned the tell-all book (sorry, memoir) D.C. Unmasked & Undressed: A Memoir. You can't make this stuff up.

I thought this would be interesting to revisit on a Black Book site since I wasn't here when the fall out occurred. **SOME** huge GAY fans of Kola Boof were greatly offended by something I did & it became a big article on WomanistMusings.Com. For my reading at the National Black Theater last year, I invited some of the so called "Drag Queens" who impersonate me (I think I'm the first author to have impersonators--which is why I'm supposedly a Diva according to my friend Dream Hampton). Anyway, the behavior of the "girls" and our comedy routine drew a huge and resounding criticism. Photo of the REAL KOLA BOOF posing with Tamarrah, my …

Where is Kola Boof when we need her? Wonder if she watched the NAACP "IMAGE" AWARDs Friday?? Image, indeed. There was certainly a preponderance of high-yellow, blue-eyed winners among the nominees; e.g. Vanessa Williams, Terrence Howard, Colin Powell, not to mention an olive "colored" Hispanic sitcom star, and the light-eyed gold-toned Regina King. And of course there was Halle Berry in all of her one-drop glory, modestly accepting an award from the light-skinned hazel-eyed Prince, displaying his usual eccentric behavior. I suspect the cameras were kept off the reaction of the losers in the audience, whose melanin must've blanched. What would the show have done wi…

Whatever happened to my frienemy Chrishayden? His absence seems to have coincided with the appearance of a new member named "Toby". The on-going saga of Chris Lee... ...leads to some interesting news about attitudes on interracial dating. The married New York congressman resigned this week when it was revealed that he had been trolling for love online. It turns out the prospective craiglist date who outed him after she Googled his real identity is a fetching mixed-race woman (she describes herself as "black-Irish"). She has a blog called "Fly Black Chick," where she has addressed the episode with verve. In commenting on the story, Zennie Abraham cites a new study about the racial preferences of online daters. Did anybody see Tavis Smiley on Bill Maher's TV show this past week? I know if ol carey watched it he had to have been apoplectic with what Tavis and Bill had to say about Obama as they gave new meaning to the word "hater" - the label carey pins on anybody who doesn't kiss the same asses he does. Bill and Tavis both calmly stated with clarity and logic their cases for being disappointed with Obama, or as Carey calls this: "hatin". Not being a particular fan of Tavis, I have to admit that he gives the distinct impression that he thinks the country would be better served if he was president. Bill gets my vote because unlike most white liberals he’s not a hypocrite. An…

I was in the gym yesterday, on a treadmill, channel surfing and noticed Oprah and Iyanla talking to each other. I was like "whoa!" “I believe in the one-drop theory,” Halle Berry says in the latest issue of Ebony. She makes that statement to explain why she considers her daughter, who has three white grandparents, to be black. "I want Black people to know that I haven’t abandoned them because I’ve had a child with a man outside of my race and I’m dating someone now outside my race who is Spanish and French." A few thoughts: "Spanish" and "French" are not races but nationalities. White is not "outside my race" for someone who is half white. The concept of "outside" presumes race as a boundary for human interaction. When Berry was born, the one-drop rule was still the law of th…

If You Were My Girl Friend - Again? Jack & Jill ran up the hill to get a marriage license/ They found bliss and shared a kiss/ and that's the end of the story. Wouldn't that be great? Through the storms of adultery, physical and mental abuse, uncommon interests, gambling, selfishness, alcoholism, deceit, sloth and boredom, wouldn't it be great if we all could be like Petunia (Ethel Waters) & Little Joe. Yes sir, Little Joe was a gambling womanizer but Petunia still loved her Little Joe. The devil tried to take Little Joe, but eventually they were hand in hand, walking to the Cabin In The Sky. February is Black History month, and I feel fortunate that my repository of memories makes my brain comparable to an organic history book, chapters of which I want to share. Being the proud great-granddaughter of freed-slaves I've decided to pull rank and briefly assume the role of a griot. I beg your indulgence. I confess to also taking pride in the fact that Prohibition was repealed the same year I was born, making it possible for people to legally drown their sorrows in booze as both me and the Great Depression came into being. Since then just what have I lived through, that most of you haven’t? Read on. Starting with Franklin D. Roosevelt, and …

"BigBuck" has nothing on Cynique. I can write trite poetry, too. In a world full of turmoil where dire conflict reigns, countries alternate between losses and gains. Democracy-starved Egyptians are engaging in riots, while overweight Capitalists feast on the latest fad diets. Financially-stable China is the new sheriff in town, and, like Europe and Japan, America’s economy is down, struggling with war and persistent unemployment, fending off Generals wanting more troop deployment. The English are preparing for Prince William’s wedding, scurrying like bugs infesting a hotel room’s bedding. North and South Korea…

"BigBuck" is having a field day with assorted "member" profiles on this board. Altho he isn't listed as a member, if he has infiltrated your "friend" list, by clicking on to his name you will be exposed to the foul excrement of this racist asshole. At some point, however, all you can do is laugh at this drivel because it's so over-the-top it loses its effect. The President of the United States, who is a man of color, neutralizes these stereotypes, and white trailer park trash rivals them.

I'm in mourning for the demise of all the provocative observations from regular members that were posted after January 11th, and were deleted along with the spam that attached itself to them. I guess white racists have to be ever vigilant in reminding Blacks how much contempt they hold for them. I can't imagine black people making a project out of going to a white site and saturating it with hate. We find better things to waste our time on.

A little while ago there was a great outpouring of concern for the health of Nelson Mandela when he took sick--primarily in your white establishment press. I guess they should be grateful--he and the ANC let them keep all the money and power. I will be ambivelent toward Mandela. He could forgive the Aparthied Regime for jailing him, killing and torturing thousands of his brothers and sisters, opressing millions, stealing the wealth. But he couldn't forgive Winnie for allegedly cheating on him while he was locked up. I see where his priorities were.

There are few activities I enjoy more than attending an NBA game! CNN reports that two professors, from Emory University and the University of Hull in England, have analyzed the records of 35,000 slave-trading voyages over three and a half centuries. They have published their findings on a web site -- The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database -- and in a book -- Atlas of the Atlantic Slave Trade. The database identifies 67,000 captives by name, age, gender, origin, and place of embarkation. The atlas features 189 maps showing where Africans were taken from, where they were taken to, and who took them. Among the findings: Four enslaved Africans left the Old World for every European. Almost every port city on the Atlantic was…

You don't have to have a passing interest in numerology as I do, to be intrigued by what the new year will allow us to observe. Four times next year something rare will occur either at 11:11 AM or 11:11 PM when for 1 minute the day, month, year and hour will be represented by a series of ones beginning with the first day of January during which time we will be able to notate: 11111111 or (1/1/11 @11:11 AM or PM.) On January eleventh virtually the same thing will occur thusly: 111111111 or (1/11/11 @ 11:11 AM or PM) Not done yet. This is what further distinguishes 2011 from other years where it's possible to match up the day, month, year and hour, because in 201…

On Tuesday I made a post on my blog entitled “Tavis Smiley is no good for Black folks!” The provocative title was used to encourage people to read the post so that I could talk about one of the good things Tavis has done and that is start SmileyBooks. I began by describing why I did not always like Tavis. My dislike for Tavis really began when I saw Tavis’ reaction to Barack’s declining to participate in Tavis’ State of Black America forum. However in hindsight my impression of Tavis has changed to one that is very favorable. I discovered pretty quickly that many people – at least those that commented on my Blog and on Facebook page DESPISE Tavis! I was ac…

Game. After watching the sequel to Wall Street, “Money Never Sleeps”, director Oliver Stone did a wonderful job to shoot the film with the focus on what these traders did on a regular basis. The story tells itself, but he focused on the nooks and crannies, which he is a master at. He captured the mannerisms and little details, such as a broker guzzling down a 5 hour energy drink, which gives the viewer insight to the job and what it takes to perform it. Trading stock, analyzing it and managing it requires high brain activity, linear thinking and some ad-libbing when things get hot in the kitchen. Most of us will not participate in such a high-risk,…

I’ve always been fascinated with the dynamics of language. A tool that enables communication, language can frequently be inadequate. But it can also be powerful. As components of language, certain words can trigger rage and indignation at the mere sound of them. The most obvious example of this is the epithet “nigger“. A simple 2-syllable utterance that stands for so much. Just the enunciation of this one word is powerful enough to incite mayhem when it comes out of the mouth of a white person in the presence of black person. A black person can seethe with suspicions about racial prejudice but once the n-bomb is dropped, anger and the threat of violence immediately erupt…
