  1. Black race, African ancestry tied to food allergies By Genevra Pittman, Reuters Health 5 MIN READ NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - In a new study of two-year-olds in Boston, black kids were twice as likely as white kids to have an immune response to foods such as peanuts, milk, and eggs, and almost four times as likely to have a “sensitization” to three or more foods. While food sensitization doesn’t necessarily pose any danger on its own, kids who are sensitized to certain foods are more likely to develop full-blown allergies to them in the future. “We know that sensitization is not the same thing as food allergy, but what they’re reporting does seem to be consistent with what has been seen in other populations,” said Christine Joseph, an allergy and asthma researcher from the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit who was not involved in the new study. Other recent studies have hinted at higher rates of food sensitizations or allergies in blacks, she told Reuters Health. Researchers also looked at the kids’ DNA and found that the more African ancestry it showed, the more likely a child was to have any type of food sensitization, especially to peanuts. But it’s still unclear why that’s the case, they said. It could be that differences in genes make some kids more likely than others to get allergies, or it may have to do with their environment and what they’re exposed to early in life. The study included about 1,100 kids, all born at Boston Medical Center. Between two and three years after birth, researchers led by Dr. Rajesh Kumar of Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago brought them in to test their immune responses to eight different types of foods that typically cause allergies: eggs, milk, peanuts, soy, shrimp, walnuts, wheat and cod. Most kids in the study were from urban areas and many were from low-income families. About six in ten of them were identified as black by their moms. In all, just over one-third of kids had an immune response to at least one of the foods, the researchers reported in Pediatrics. About 38 percent of black kids had a food sensitization, compared to 22 percent of white kids. When the researchers took into account factors like whether or not kids were breastfed and if moms smoked while they were pregnant, the black two-year-olds were more than twice as likely to have a food sensitization. They were also almost four times as likely to have a detectable immune-system response to three or more of the potential allergens. Hispanic kids tended to have more food sensitizations than white kids, but statistics showed that finding could have been due to chance. Food sensitizations were also more common in kids whose ancestors were mostly from Africa, compared to those of European descent, according to genetic tests. There were some differences between kids whose moms reported their race as black and those who had more gene markers suggesting African descent. For example, African ancestry was linked to a greater chance of having a high immune response to peanuts, whereas black race was not. That tells researchers that genetics may play a role in how likely kids are to have food sensitizations or allergies. Or, something about different ancestral environments may be playing a role, Kumar said -- for example, people from Africa are known to have lower vitamin D levels early in life. Vitamin D has been linked to some aspects of immune function. On another level, cultural factors such as what type of foods kids are exposed to when they’re young, or where they grow up, might trigger allergies, especially if there is already an underlying race-related genetic susceptibility, Joseph said. More research is needed to better determine what’s behind these differences in risk, both by race and ancestry, they agreed. For now, Kumar said, “we need to be aware that food allergy is a problem within urban populations.” Pediatricians, he told Reuters Health, “should equally think of food allergy in their African American patients as they do in their white patients.” SOURCE: bit.ly/ny7YDj Pediatrics, online September 5, 2011. Black race, African ancestry tied to food allergies | Reuters From 1971............... EFFECTS OF MILK ON BLACKS NOTED MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 14 —A Baltimore research team has found that more than half of black schoolchildren may be Unable to digest milk properly, raising serious questions about the usefulness of school milk programs to help raise the nu tritional status of blacks. Dr. David M. Paige, who de Cribed the findings here today at the annual meeting of the American Public Health Asso ciation, said children who had this inability probably could not get the expected nutrition al benefit from the milk they drink. Prior to this study, milk in tolerance was known to be common among nonwhite adults, including Orientals and Indians, but nonwhite children were thought to be able to handle milk without difficulty. In the Baltimore tests, how ever, 58 per cent of the black children were found to be milk intolerant, compared with only 18 per cent of the white chil dren. Whereas the failure of many black children to drink milk has usually been attributed to lack of money and education, the Baltimore findings suggest that an inability to digest milk may be the major cause. Among the black children in the study who did not drink milk, 85 per cent were found to be milk intolerant. But only 17 per cent of white children who were not milk drinkers were unable to digest milk. The study was conducted among 312 Negro and 221 white children in the first through the sixth grades at two Baltimore elementary schools. Dr. Paige, a pediatri cian at Johns Hopkins Univer sity, said, he saw “no reason why the findings shouldn't be applicable to all black chil dren.” Milk Intolerance is a result of the missing of an enzyme, lactase, which helps break down the milk sugar, lactose. Persons with a lactase defi ciency who consume milk or milk products may stiffer such symptoms as abdominal gas, bloating, cramps and diarrhea. Thus, feeding milk to black children who are unable to di gest it properly may have the paradoxical effect in some chil dren of impairing their health. The study was done by re cording how much milk the youngsters drank as part of their lunch in school lunch rooms. Those who finished less than half of an eight‐ounce container of milk were classi fied as nondrinkers of milk. They were twice as prevalent among blacks as whites. In fol low‐up studies, the children were given lactose tolerance tests, which showed the much higher frequency of milk intol erance among blacks. Interviews with others re vealed that all the children who were not milk drinkers had been able to drink milk without ill effects when they were in fants. None had a history of milk allergy or other milk feed ing problems, Dr. Paige report ed. Apparently, then, lactase is present in infancy, but the en zyme system in many children disappears early in childhood. EFFECTS OF MILK ON BLACKS NOTED - The New York Times (nytimes.com)
  2. MY THOUGHTS AS I LISTENED 1:17 the third black disney princess 1:22 Hans Christian Anderson version was so different than this. 2:17 mmessages to children and adults, remember christianity was originally taught through moral tales, not the bible, cause most couldn't read 3:45 good memory research, I never knew Queen latifah played ursula 4:17 why did you like Melissa mccarthy's ursula 4:41 based on inflation , the animated made more 4:58 school time: Cinderella with brandy side whitney : noni rose as tiani in princess and frog; princess of wakanda in the Black Panther series; Halley Bailey as Ariel is fourth 6:26 yeah, the creature in the film lady in the water is more like what anderson or europan historical fiction described mermaids are 8:23 that's right Merida, I will fight for my own hand! 9:05 a lot of urban usa, most of rural usa isn't mixed 9:28 I can see the despisal of the female characters whose only goal is to get a man being slowly murdered off inpsires you:) 10:50 your nice to disney, Disney over the last thirty years, is trying to make more money by placating the modern audience which has non white males with money. Disney would go bak to fantasia's black centaurs if the dollars went that way 11:49 Great point, philosophically having the casting untied to how characters are described is supposed to lead all in the audience to be aracial but it doesn't really work out that way 13:01 and they probably felt they wanted sebastian to be less "caribbean" 14:17 I remember telling people, this movie will make a ton of money. Disney knows how to make money. They comprehend how to be effective commercialist using art, I don't see them as culturally caring as many suggest but... 15:32 meow!:) leo season, have fun IN AMENDMENT Again, I was very fortunate as a black child, not merely to be raised by two black parents of the opposite gender, but also cause both of my parents were knowledgeable of and exposed me to the cultures of the many black tribes in the black village. The one biggest problem, many communities have is their miscomprehension to their internal variance. It isn't that humans in any community don't comprehend the internal variance exist. But I find most people growing up tend to be raised by parents or guardians who criminalize, a negative bias, to be honest, those in their community by one racial standard who don't share something about them on another racial standard. I am of the same phenotypical race as clarence thomas. But we are not of the same philosophical race. But what is the point? The point I don't mind Clarence Thomas being of a different tribe in the village than me. Most black people do. That is the problem. Can you accept that other black tribes to thrive will hinder your own tribe? But what does this have to do with the little mermaid. Two things, each tribe in the black village in the usa has its own heritage<what is carried> or culture < what is grown> , that has similarities, but also variances to the other tribes in the village. Part of that heritage is its fantasy or mythology. Some tribes in the black village embrace white fantasy brewed of the usa, like huckleberry finn or disney products as their own. Some don't. I don't see disney products as black, but that doesn't mean I think all other black people do or most importantly, all other black people should. The problem is, again, too many black people think other black people should be changed. That is the simple truth in the black community. The second is, whenever Black people are present in media, no matter who is financing it, black people have to ask themselves the simple question. Does this represent us? And there lies a huge problem for the black village in the usa, cause the black village in the usa has so many tribes with unjoinable cultures or heritages that dysfunctional argument is all that can come from Black discourse on our identity in media. IT doesn't anyone is wrong or right in the discourse, but the tribes have differences that can not be bridged. And no tribe is strong enough to sway the others, unlike to be fair, the white village in the usa, who has tribes strong enough to move the entire village even if many tribes don't want it . ala the civil rights act. You can see this with the global Chinese community and the commonly called mainland. And this is where Disney's the little mermaid comes front and center. A village that has no central identity, because it doesn't have a dominant tribe in itself, can't make clear delineations to what is acceptable or not, which some tribes in the black village in the usa want as well. But, this means black discourse becomes an automatic negative whenever identity comes into play. So, a white film depicting a black mermaid based on a tale from a white european man to the modern global ticketbuyer who ars a hyper multiracial blend creates... an autonegative discourse in the black community, where no one is wrong, or right, but concurrence of thought between the members of the village is nearly dead. And this discussion by @Pioneer1 in this forum is a prime example White People Who Can Pass For Black, Brown, and Yellow. - Culture, Race & Economy - African American Literature Book Club (aalbc.com) The commentors are literally repeating their points because how one views race doesn't have a bridge to another when it simple doesn't. It becomes either someone just gives in and says they change their position or they say nothing. But everything else is repetition unless a deeper issue is discussed. The deeper issue is black identity in the usa, but as i said, the only way discourse can come to an all agree is if all have the same position. But which black tribe's position will be used? Again, Frederick Douglass was booed by a crowd of all black people speaking his composite nation speech. Douglass is a man that most blacks of wealth, the black one percent, in the modern usa tout as a hero, what does it say that most blacks booed him at the end of his days and most blacks in modernity, the black ninety nine percent, boo the blacks of wealth today? The cohesion in history comes from the same problem. A position on blacks relationship to the usa isn't accepted between the tribes so you get argument and no actions. @Pioneer1 also asked the following Help A Brother Out......My Thinking Patterns and Perspectives of the World - Culture, Race & Economy - African American Literature Book Club (aalbc.com) But it is another prime example of different tribes. The reality is, every black home should had taught what should had been common knowledge. That the black community, a phenotypical race, in the usa began its existence in the usa unlike the whites, with a lack of cohesion that has never gone away. It is that simple. When black militants say: my forebears wanted to kill whites, they are correct, but not all black forebears in the usa wanted to do that or did do that.. When black voters say: my forebears fought to get the vote side whites as equals, they are correct, but not all black forebears in the usa wanted to do that or did do that. So you get people in the Black community as adults wondering why the Black community has such negative discourse, why blacks don't do like they do, when the answer should had been told to them by their parents who knew. And , just in case you may think this is an isolated issue in the black community in the usa, it isn't. I argue it is the usa's great problem. The entire issue with the entertainment industry is the culture of slavery in fiscal capitalism in the usa, which is purer to the usa than unions or individual rights or anything else. Hollywood KAput The only thing that survived the english colonial form of the usa into its independent self from the british empire to modernity is slavery. Yes, slavery still exist in the penal system in the usa today. And yet, while all in the usa know this, the lack of this truth in the homes of people growing up, which all adults know, leads to people's shock that the fiscally wealthy desire or manage fiscal capitalsm in the usa to always be a slavery based way. From Ronald Reagan cutting government programs to give money to the rich , like the taking of native american land to grow plantations. From failed banks being given a welfare check by Bush jr + Obama like when the southern agrarian economy couldn't return to its former profitable self in reconstruction and the government embraced jim crow to get black people into the southern prison systems to revitalize the southern agrarian economy, which happened to gilded wealth accumulation. From the automotive or entertainment industries failures while being supported by the usa government reflects how the enslavers who lost everything were given it all back by the usa government , through the usa's power curtaling the essence of fiscal capitalistic that the usa advertises. But the key is all in the usa know this, but few say it. And some want slavery in a stronger form to make a comeback , ala the robot. The point being the usa's 300 million make up a village with a quite large number of tribes who don't fit together, heritage-wise or culturally or philosophically, but raise their children and suggest in themselves that a unity exist or will exist which of course is a simple lie, but which creates the discourse battles leading to no where. Finally, and away from things, thanks to @harry brown for announcing the anniversary of AALBC. I still have goals I want to see in this ecommunity and hopefully they will happen.
  3. That's a typo. Frying...could be a Freudian slip tho.🤣 The US government knows exactly what's going on with everything traveling land, sea, air and space. The US has satellites everywhere. They see and hear everything. It's all about maintaining military readiness and remaining the #1 Super Power on the planet. UAPs/UFOs is a convenient distraction to keep people preoccupied with something else. It's a money-making form of entertainment.😎
  4. 🤣 My relatives live(d) in SOUTHEAST DC!!! LOL! I lived and went to school there at times when I was young.. At one time, my aunt lived in Kennilworth! Ya Know! And, my Mom was mugged on 17th Street SE walking home from the grocery store. I can't believe you just wrote this. At one time, even the cabs wouldn't come to that side of DC. LOL. But DC can't be all that much more worse than what I've heard about Detroit, can it? 🤣 What is OG?
  5. @Chevdove doing what the good professor suggested will clear up most problems. Let know how you make out.
  6. Wait a minute bro....I was born and raised in Southeast Washington DC.😁 Do not come for my beloved city and specifically for my section of it.🤣 I'm an OG now but still repping SE DC to the fullest. I wouldn't be here without it.😎
  7. I'm not getting that box. Try clearing your browser data (cache, cookies, etc.) and log back onto the site. Maybe there's some junk in your trunk.🤣😎
  8. I believe this only partially and don't think that the real origin of genes that cause lactase to be in the intestines of certain people while not in others is not completely understood. Scientist know it has to do with genes but then they say it is also based on some cultures who drink milk all of the time and for this reason will develop lactase. But again, I think there is some contradiction especially considering the ancient TURKISH PEOPLES; The Keraites. They know that the Keraites drink milk and ate yogurt but they did have problems with being lactose intolerant. @Troy THE BLACK GENE? Melanin, would probably be the best way to understand this topic. There are combination of genes that do define certain characteristics that certain humans exhibit. Genes tend to travel in pairs. But as you say, we are all on a spectrum when it comes to all the characteristics, ALL EXCEPT FOR ONE!!! And that one, is what makes people of African descent, ABORGINALS, unique. And yes, I believe that understanding genetics and how modern western mankind have confused us with their definition of 'Race' in relation to 'skin color' is wrong but this is what they did to make it seem complex. SKIN COLOR is arbitrary in terms of defining humans based solely on this phenotype basis, but the origin and genetics is important too, in how it relates to what @Pioneer1is addressing. Food allergies are a reality but how it relates to certain humans in terms of 'race' is confusing, I agree, but it's because of modern interpretations. We, as modern humans share more traits than not, and even show that we have inter-bred with Primitive humans, however, you will never see any scientific proof that Neanderthals were walking around with afros. This factor is vital in understanding how we all as modern humans differientiate on the spectrum of genotypical traits. That is absolutely questionable. Scientists have not confirmed any male haplogroup for Neanderthals, and as this article explains, they are trying to exact statements based on 'X-linked Haplotype' to base their opinions. Other studies say that Neanderthals were Lactose Intolerant, but I don't actually believe that completely because for now, they say that Neanderthals ate meat as a main diet and did not drink milk. And they say that Neanderthals have blood type O, and that is a broad interpretation, imo. So I think though, that Neanderthal genetics is important in understanding how we differ today!
  9. Ah! What an amazing observation! @ProfD I had a delayed reaction to this point in that makes me think of how the Western viewpoint of the kind of brown people that do fight against things they don't like are negatively portrayed byway of negative propaganda, so therefore, this could be thought of by others as a way to make others afraid of taking any form of action. Ah! But @Pioneer1 for some BLACK PEOPLE, sometimes complaining to HR or managers will absolutely get you fired or cause much more harrassment. I KNOW THIS ON A PERSONAL BASIS! If the POLL had a third option @richardmurray, of which would be 'Not sure', then I would select that option because I really don't know if other ethnic people complain as much as Black people do. I know that they complain, but I don't know if they do to the same degree as Black people. I read some of the article you posted but need to come back and read all of it before I know for sure how to comment. BUT, I do feel sometimes, that only after Black people complain about certain issues that revolve around racial injustice, then and only then do other ethnic people complain when they see that Black people begin to get noticed and this, in turn, is used against Black people whereby others will get the better relief while we just get blamed for starting the problem and then demonized and then suppressed even more so. That is how I feel.
  10. @Troy Yes you statians are. I have always been more communal, even as a child. To your reply straightly, the questions are to the black community in the usa or the usa human populace in completion. 1)what has to improve in how individualism works in said community? In my mind one point. The one thing I hear no one say... Own up to it. It may sound silly but one of the biggest problems in the usa is people don't own up to their own culture that their actions display. Black folk like me will always despise the KKK But, the KKK are better than the majority of whites who clearly dislike black people as negatively as the KKK but are too proud to admit it. If you are about you, just say it. No shame in saying, I am looking out for me while all you do is look out for you. But the black community or the larger human populace in the usa suffers from an inability to admit in public what their actions show. The faux communal discourse form hyper individuals to me is the problem. I don't have a problem with anyone , and that starts with black people, being about themselves. I follow my own path. I like being communal. but I also profess my position publicly. I am not ashamed to say I like living around black folks and prefer living around black folks, and I don't care for living aside non blacks <as I define blacks side non blacks>. But too many individualists are not ashamed to act for only self but are ashamed to advertise it. That will be a nice change. 2)What inevitable weaknesses come from such a system that need to be expected or embraced as truth? a dysfunction of the way... all ways have dysfunction. Communalism's great problem is it doesn't allow for individual growth at the same rate or width or uniqueness as individualism. But, Individualism's problem is it doesn't allow for collective action or interaction at the same rate width or flexibility as communalism. @The Black Magician Thank you for sharing photos of your organization. You can make a group on aalbc where you can just use the calendar function to notify people of dates. I Will be willing to help if you want me to make the group and guide the basic structure.
  11. That's easy, because these types of stories attract people and drive ad revenue. How did ya'll come to hear about this story? Unfortunately, we have already done it. By relinquishing our Black-owned media platforms we are at the mercy of "mainstream" media.
  12. I wear being Black as a badge of honor. I'm proud of it. I truly believe that Black people are the righteous. That's why other races of people attack and undermine us. It may not happen in my lifetime but Black folks will eventually get tired of being mistreated and destroy our enemies. When the Black man rises; peace will be restored to the Earth.😎
  13. Oops homie.🤣 You're absolutely right about taking actions that actually work. That requires a plan: 1) Identify problem. 2) Come up with a solution. 3) Execute. Of course, that level of discipline goes back to codification.😎
  14. ProfD If anything, her story could have a net negative effect on missing and exploited Black folks. That's EXACTLY why I think they promoted it so much even when they realized early on it was fraudulent. THOUSANDS of Black women and girls go missing in this nation every year and stories like this just give the racists in the media and on the police departments a convenient EXCUSE to point to now for their inaction and lack of concern. Chev BUT, I do think that what she did is serious enough to report though. What she did was really crazy. I read that a huge police search was launched. Not sure what the police department were doing and why they did it but it seems that whatever hoax or scam was going on....a lot of the police and media were "in" on it too. Even when they knew the story was false or likely to be false, they continued pursuing the story full throttle. I personally believe it was done to tarnish the image of missing Black women so that when Black women and girls come up missing....the public will be further desensitized to them and maybe not even take there abductions seriously.
  15. zeke1234 As a Christian, And as a Christian.....how do you feel about THESE verses as they relate the concept of Reparations? How do our ancestors, many who have entered into the Kingdom of God, see this now and sensual generation reaping monetary benefits, from their pain and suffering 250 years ago? Perhaps with pride and a sense of satisfaction! Kind of a like parents who get to see their children grow up and accomplish deeds even great than them. Is the purpose of reparations to make whole for the crime/sin committed? No human being or government can "make whole" the sins of what happened to our Ancestors in the Great Western Ma'afa (TransAtlantic Slave Trade). That can only be accomplished Divinely. Reparations is an attempt to COMPENSATE for the generational injuries caused by that horrible crime. When we pick and choose which governments to demand reparations from, and leave out the really bad slavers, do we further dishonor our ancestors? I would say not necessarily. SOME Justice is better than no justice. If a man's wife and daugthers were gang-raped by a group of 7 thugs and you could only catch 4 of them....should you just like THOSE 4 go out of spite for the other 3 who got away (so far)? ....or should you hold the 4 you got right now and proceed to administer justice to THEM while still pursuing all leads to the other 3? From a 'way in the future' point of view, put reparations in a living trust that will last for 500 years. Each person who is more that 50% Black, can get $10,000 to 20,000 a year, based on financial need. Lol....ONLY $10,000 - $20,000? That's barely enough to get a certificate or Associate's degree at a local Community college....lol. That Evanston 'reparations', settlement, for 'Negroes' who lived in Evanston from 1919-1965 being discriminated against in housing. Which souls of which rednecks on the verge of hell will be set free in Skokie, I mean Evanston, , because of a few Negroes desire to 'get theirs' right here and now, while 'you other' Negroes get your own later, if at all. There is more than one redneck waiting at the gates of hell, whose bonds have been unshackled, because of this unthought through Evanston reparations plan. Repentance for racist rednecks, redemptive money, buying back White souls from the gates of Hell Are you sure about that? Did a Divine Being come to you personally and tell you that receiving Reparations lets the racist Caucasians that tortured some of our Ancestor "off the hook" and out of hell? , only greedy carnal, me me me, Negroes would do such a thing. Let the Whites and Hispanic (Cuba, Mexico and Brazil big time slave nations) keep their reparations, and continue to burn their forefathers in Hell. Love the Lawd, and go to church, I preached on reparations this morning. Next time you decide to do a sermon on Reparations....invite ME to address the Congregation...lol. Chev Some people say that to give a monetary large sum to Black Americans would not be beneficial and believe that REparations should be given in the form of programs like college vouchers and medical benefits. I believe ALL American citizens should have free healthcare, however I think AfroAmericans should especially have it in our Reparations package. But by also need MONETARY compensation as well. To deny people money but give them college vouchers to go to Universities pretty much keeps them trapped in the same racist system that was established on the very backs of their Ancestors. The goal is to BE FREE and get from out under the yoke of the Oppressor. Not go to school to learn how to be a better slave/worker for him.
  16. I grew up reading Uncle Remus stories!!! Brer Rabbit and 'em......lol.
