http://aalbc.org/ I think I'm getting closer to a new homepage design. I've completely reworked the menu structure and am playing around with elements on the page. I still have not settled on colors yet, I kind of like the mustard background (more relaxing), but I also like the blue menu which is more energetic, but the too colors are not exactly complementary. I think I'm going to sell the sliding banner at the top of the page as ad space. As always I'm looking for suggestions, ideas and comments.

Here on AALBC.com, I maintain a list of bookstores in America and a few that are abroad -- stores that I've visited in Nigeria, Jamaica, and other places. The Source of Knowledge Bookstore in Newark is a store that I have not yet viewed but from what I can they are definitely worth a visit -- I plan to check it out.

There were three books written by or about Black people that won Pulitzer Prizes last week. There was one book written by a brother of european descent which looks very interesting. I was unfamiliar with Sweet Taste of Liberty. The other two books, especially Whitehead's, has gotten a ton of attention both here on AALBC and the mainstream media (who just love him to death).

3:06 i think more reality t.v. cause from my experience the money to make movies demands you talk to people who have money willing to lose, and said people want more surety. 5:53 independent films allow for the artistic acceptance even if it is financially against audience tastes. 7:52 the ability to gain experience in the arts differs on discipline. a painter can make a painting but a film maker needs to make and show a film which is more expensive. In conclusion that is the issue with projec greenlight, the process after a film is made matters

Hey all! I'm a black Guyanese woman and together with my husband Joshua we've written a book to empower children of Caribbean heritage, especially those from Guyana. The Granny JJ Adventures is a set of stories about an old lady - Granny JJ (based on my mother) who solves mysteries in the villages and towns of Guyana. She speaks Creole (which is like Patwa - English with words from African, Arawaken, Dutch and Indian - it's easy to pick up) and the book is full of traditional wisdom proverbs, hand-drawn sketches and fun. We've had people enjoy it from Jamacia, Trinidad and even the Middle East! We really pushed hard with this book - we initially wa…

The Children’s Africana Book Awards are given to the best children’s and young adult books on Africa. The awards have been given for 25 years. I just learned both last week, via email. I just added the 2017 award winning books, I'm working on getting all 25 years added too. I have also added these awards into my calculus to determine the most critically acclaimed books (about 3% of all the books in my database) None of these books are on that list yet, but as I add compile more information this may change. The database was expanded beyond African American literature a great deal over the last year many more authors from all over Africa and th…

Hi all! I'm posting in the hopes that AALBC might review Caine Prize for African Writing winner Namwali Serpell's debut novel, THE OLD DRIFT (3/26, Hogarth/Crown, ISBN-13 978-1101907146), which just received a 4th starred pre-pub review (blurbs at the bottom of the post). THE OLD DRIFT broaches the topics of colonialism, independence, the AIDS epidemic, white supremacy, familial legacy, and the infinite variations of lust and love, all depicted in a literary style that mixes historical fiction, fairy tale, suspense, magical realism, and science fiction. Instead of writing an "immigration story," Namwali has written a "reverse immigration story," in…

For example, I will perform this exact paragraph while utilizing a variety of formats below. Peruse the multifaceted content and share which presentation was most enjoyable for you... Hi all, I'm writing a mini history booklet (with illustrations) on the history of Detroit with regards to its Black population. My question is, what permissions do I need when discussing historical figures, many of whom are still alive? I just read, Lies My Teacher Told Me and there's no way the author consulted with the heirs of Lincoln and Ho Chi Minh. Is it free game? It's nothing scandalous or inflammatory. Just history.
