  1. When I was born, I weighed two pounds, three ounces. The doctor who examined me told my mother, "Congratulations, Mrs. Pryor, you have a boy! No, wait, it's a girl! No, it is a boy!" Mom cried, "What did I have? A freak?" Yes and No. My freakish life parallels my father's in many ways: a Peoria whorehouse, abuse, alcohol and drug addiction, and frequent bad decisions. But I survived. And that's what my book is about, a real life story of overcoming obstacles, surviving and thriving. Learn more about the book at https://inapryorlife.com/

  2. I suspect I’m one of a small handful of Black indie writers who write an African-American Historical Fiction series. I post daily on Instagram what I call this date in “white history.” It’s not Black history because to quote my favorite African Proverb: “Until the lion tells the story, the hunter will always be the hero.” Every day, I post an episode of white history describing murders of men, women, and children, court rulings declaring us less than human, and terrorism directed toward Black Americans somewhere in America. It’s called “this date in white history.” When you understand their history, you must write about it. We need to tell people about whi…

  5. Oprah has a new selection coming out February 6th. Booksellers are not allowed to sell, loan, or display the book before the pub date. Right now they won't even say what the title of the book is or who the author is. All I have is the ISBN13: 9781616208776. If I knew the author was Black I might consider adding it to my database. Google say the publisher is Workman Publishing; which technically one could derive from the ISBN. I can't believe this is that serious. It is just a book... On another front Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House hit the selves earlier than expected. I had no intention of adding the book to the site, but my aunt…

I did a search on the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Hurston and didn't find anything here. I haven't read it yet but I'm hoping over the holidays I'll have some time to start. Ms. Hurston was a black writer living in Florida during the 1930s. This is supposed to be her best known and most controversial work, according to Amazon. It takes places in a black Florida town. She was accused of pandering to white readers by using black dialogue. The book was out of print for thirty years but was re-printed beginning in 1978. Has anyone read this who could comment on it?

Today in the forum discussion at Black Arts In America, artist Joseph Osbome, who works in a abstract, metaphonic, symbolic style of drawing and painting, asks this question: Does black art have to be a literal statement or is being a black person enough? As a fiction writer who sees himself as an artist, I thought it was a good question. Here is my answer to Osbome’s question: “We have this same challenge in fiction writing, especially novel writing. In my opinion, if we are speaking solely about “art,” even a piece of abstract art, it becomes a quality question. If we succeed in our work and it becomes art, then the question doesn’t matter. This is the cover of a book I wrote a year ago. I wrote this book because i am passionate to the area I wrote about. Some feel as a black woman the images chosen should be of a black face rather than white because it would be more acceptable to a black audience. This book was not written with the color of a skin in mind but to a wide audience whether it be black or white. on the issue of Fornication & its understanding. I wrote this book truly geared toward the young upcoming adults who will be leading this country & this world soon. I would appreciate the views of this audience on the question of what color of person should be placed on the cover of a book.

New Guild Survey Reveals Majority of Authors Earn Below Poverty Line"So what does that Federal Poverty Level statistic mean? Given that a single person earning less than $11,670 annually sits below the poverty line, 56% of respondents would qualify, if they relied solely on income from their writing. The survey also indicated that not only are many authors earning little, they are, since 2009, also earning less. Overall, the median writing-related income among respondents dropped from $10,500 in 2009 to $8,000 2014 in 2014, a decline of 24%. The decline came for both full-time and part-time authors with full-time authors reporting a 30% drop in income to $17,500 and part-…

Whilst reading the autobiography of Leroi Jones, Baracka himself mentioned a David Henderson poem that he was very impressed with. The poem itself was based on the 1964 Impressions hit, Keep on Pushing. Anyway, Henderson was a co founder of the Black Arts movement and I was 'aware' of his name but couldn't quite place him. After some minor research, the penny dropped. He wrote a biography on Jimi Hendrix ( which I've just ordered) and De Mayor of Harlem. I think he was partly responsible for the 1968 book, Black Fire: an Anthology of Afro American Writing. My first port of call was here for some information on Henderson but I couldn't seem to find him in…

Fours years ago you could reach many of your "fans," on Facebook, by simply posting a link to your website. Today with almost three times as many "fans" I do not have the same level of engagement when posting links to my website. Even buying an advertisement (a small $20 ad) does not yield the same reach I could get four years ago with 1/3 the "followers." It is clear that Facebook has diminished engagement for content containing links pointing to external website. This is based upon years of collecting data and careful…
