La Casa Azul Bookstore is a bookstore just a few block from my home. The bookstore is less than a year old and is triving. The store owner says she has hosted 200 hundred events in just under a year. This video is pretty interesting as several authors give us their take on the state of independent Black owned book stores. A couple of then recommended their favorite stores perhaps some of you all can visit them.

In 1995, in Chicago, Bezos manned an Amazon booth at the annual conclave of the publishing industry, which is now called BookExpo America. Roger Doeren, from a Kansas City store called Rainy Day Books, was stopped short by Amazon’s sign: “Earth’s Biggest Bookstore.” Approaching Bezos, he asked, “Where is Earth’s biggest bookstore?” “Cyberspace,” Bezos replied. “We started a Web site last year. Who are your suppliers?” “Ingram, and Baker & Taylor.” “Ours, too. What’s your database?” “ ‘Books in Print.’ ” “Ours, too. So what makes you Earth’s biggest?” “We have the most affiliate links”—a form of online advertising. Doeren…

“FREEZE!” We rushed inside the bank so quickly that the bank employees looked like it was the end of the world as they knew it. We had caught them with their underwear down! They were bullshitting, laughing and talking and we never gave them time to regain their composure. I vaulted over the counter like an Olympic high hurdler and when I came down on the other side, I swept the teller out of my way as if she were a five foot five Barbie Doll. “This ain’t your money, bitch, so don’t get yourself fucked up. Just lay your ass on the floor and let me go on about my motherfucking biz…

I am one of the many talented black independent authors that have written groundbreaking novels. The sequel to my award-winning novel, Mirrors of Life Part 2: The Fight for Political Power, is a thriller in today's political climate. When the actions of fictional characters playout in real life, the imagination is made real, and fiction becomes non-fiction. There is no difference between the KKK and the Nazis. In 1927, Donald Trump's father was arrested at a Klan rally in Queens, NY, when Klan members clashed with police. In 1939, there was a Nazi rally billed as American patriots that filled Madison Square Garden. Rumor is that Donald Trump's grandfather, a …

Kam told me about his connection with the Johnson & Johnson family years ago. Kam, a very modest and low key guy, actually showed me the masion he lived in during a visit a few years ago but he stated almost matter of factly and I did not think much about it. But after reading some of the details the Kam story seems much more compeling. Here is Kam's review of the book. I freely admit it seems unlikely that Kam's revierw would be unbaised and I would not have published it were he not in it. As a result I labeled the page Book "Information" rather than "Review". Again, I find Kam William's portion of the book simply fascinating. If you've been reading …

I just published our bestsellers list for the period ending April 30th. I actually did not have a chance to really analyze the list, so I did not notice that Brown Girl Books published the top three books on the fiction side! I usually analyze the list for trends right before i publish the information in my newsletter. However, the news became quite evident after posting the information on Twitter. I have to congratulate both the authors and the publisher, they are one of the great stories in Black books today--look out for great things from Brown Girls Books.

The article I emailed about Google hijacking business from booksellers got a lot of attention. Much of the reader feedback mentioned Amazon as another problem. I atually think they are a bigger problem, but that is an article for another day. At any rate one reader left me the following message: Thanks for this email – very illuminating. I will keep in mind when purchasing. Keep up the great work. I am looking for a good book on the Reconstruction – have any recommendations? I share this message here, obviously, to get some recommendations. It also stuck me that any Black bookseller, worth a darn, should have been able to come up with the…

I have 20 coupons, for $100 of free advertising with Google Ad Words. You need to spend $25 to get the $100. Some of you may know I've been on a rant lately about Google's impact on the world wide web -- both good and bad. Please do not take this as an blanket endorsement of Google, for it is not. What it is, is $100 in free advertising.. If you ever wanted to experiment with placing online advertisements using with Google's AdWords here is your chance. You are only risking $25 (less than the price of AALBC.com's least expensive ad) to learn a few things and maybe even help generate extra business by attracting more visitors to your website. …

Hi family! I'm Christopher R. Kaden, an author based in Atlanta, and I wanted to share with you the importance of spending quality time with your children. We all have busy lives, hectic schedules, but not taking the time to spend with your children can lead to problems. My first published children's book, The Best Feeling in the World, illustrates this well. It tells the story of eight-year old Simon, who, at first glance, would appear to have it all: all the latest video games that he plays on his big-screen TV, a chef to cook for him, and a driver to take him to and from school. But Simon isn't happy, because what he really wants is his Mom and Dad to spend time with h…

Hello, I would like to submit Yewande Omotoso's novel for possible review--THE WOMAN NEXT DOOR (Picador; Trade Paperback; $16; 288 pages; February 7, 2017; 978-1-250-12457-9). The Tenth Commandment is abundantly clear: thou shalt not covet they neighbor’s house. Of course, it includes a few other things—like spouses, house staff, and barnyard animals. However, Marion Agostino doesn’t care about neighbor Hortensia James’s spouse, housekeeping staff, or pets. What Marion wants is the house that her black neighbor now lives in with her white husband, the first house that Marion ever designed—her magnum opus. In her stunning U.S. debut, THE WOMAN NEXT DOOR, Yewande…

Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am offers an artful and intimate meditation on the life and works of the legendary storyteller and Nobel prize-winner. From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio to ‘70s-era book tours with Muhammad Ali, from the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing room, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature. Inspired to write because no one took a “little black girl” seriously, Morrison reflects on her lifelong deconstruction of the master narrative. Woven together with a rich colle…

Patience de Verteuil left her home in Trinidad with her father for what she thought would be a short journey to America. Instead she finds herself embroiled in a struggle between powerful supernatural forces, in which an object in her possession means the difference between defeat or victory. The Long Walk is a Steamfunk tale that will keep you riveted until the final word. "The Long Walk" is a robust action adventure, filled with battles, demons, and magic . . . The story's conclusion is brilliant, and I won't spoil it here; however, it made me quite anxious for the next installment in Milton Davis's Rite of Passage universe." -Nicole Kurtz, author and publishe…

One day I left home and it took me ten years to get back. No, I did not get lost. What happened was even worse. I was arrested, convicted and sentenced to prison for a crime I did not commit. Even though there were five people, including a prominent, black lawyer who could vouch for my whereabouts at the time of the robbery, it did not matter. I was black, so I was guilty. This is not a new occurrence and it is now a part of an even wider conspiracy to lock up black males. Last year, a well-known judge in Pennsylvania was convicted in the so-called "Cash 4 Kids" program where judges would send black youth to prison in exchange for money. It did not matter if they we…

Of course, these are not the only 200 Important Black books coming out in 2023, but this is perhaps the most comprehensive list out there — at least I have not seen one with more titles. This list of images will grow over time. On a related note: The total number of books on AALBC published in 2022 was the lowest it has been since 2003! The difference is not a few book books but by hundreds of books! Read More ▶
