  1. My personal experience with the world wide web mirrors exactly what Rushkoff is saying in this video. If good to hear that he is hopeful about the long term prospects for the web, for the the same reasons that I am. This video and the commentary below is from the Big Think website. “It's harder for most people to making a living now than it was before the rise of online businesses like Facebook and Amazon. That's because the digital economy is hurting the real economy, says media theorist Douglas Rushkoff. Competition is increasingly fierce in just about every industry, and digital technologies have allowed companies to pursue monopolies like never before — because …

Today, June 7th, would've been Prince's 58th birthday. Back in the 1980s, my 2 daughters were Prince fanatics. And it wasn't long before after being constantly exposed to his unique funky sound, I became a fan of his too, even accompanying them to his concerts over the years. In the early 90s, however, I pretty much abandoned the ol boy because his music no longer hooked me like the songs back in his hey day. "Adore" was the last song by him that I really dug. But I did take the title of my last self-published effort "The Only One", from a line in his song "I wanna be your lover." Saturday, my daughter is having a belated birthday observation for Prince. All the inv…

Well, the televised re-make of Roots came to an end and I, personally, was enriched and educated by ignoring calls to boycott it. I have yet to see the gangsta rap film, "Straight Outta Compton", which I assume would be Snoop Dog's preference for black folks to watch instead of a saga about slavery, but I don't think it could have been any better than this re-make of Roots. In critiquing this TV special, I am not inspired to give a long detailed analysis. My impression of it can be summed up in a paragraph. IMO, Roots was in the genre of a classic, character-driven epic and was well-produced, well-directed, well-cast and well-acted. Its in-depth portrayal of the …

I still don't think remaking Roots was necessary given, as we've discussed the great many other stories which have yet to make it to the screen. It is curious The Atlantic failed to mention the fact the Alex's story was largely fictional, as if this does not matter. When Roots broadcast it was presented as truth. (@Sara, do you think Haley would have paid over $500,000, in an out of court settlement, for plagiarizing a single paragraph?) Social media knows I have no love for the Huffington Post (mainly because they, unnecessarily exploit writers), so in their incessant mission to share things with me that reinforces the my world view (the thing I want the least), I was presented with this message on every social media platform I visited the other day. I contribute to the echo chamber that is now the WWW, and share it here was well, because after BEA this shot also reminds me of mainstream publishing in general. HuffPost is typical. Most of the events I attended at BEA in Chicago last week were dominated by women.

Carlton Mark Waterhouse, Indiana University Editor’s note: This article is part of our collaboration with Point Taken, a new program from WGBH that will next air on Tuesday, May 10 on PBS and online at pbs.org. The show features fact-based debate on major issues of the day, without the shouting. The debate over reparations in the United States began even before slavery ended in 1865. It continues today. The overwhelming majority of academics studying the issue have supported the calls for compensating black Americans for the centuries of chattel slavery and the 100 years of lynching, mob viol…

"In our world, however, extremes quickly meet. But for all his good works, some of Park’s assumptions were little better. I stopped to eat at a restaurant and sat by the window so I could watch the people passing by on the street. There were literally hundreds of people milling around and waiting in line. Amid all the confusion and traffic, a delivery man was pushing a cart stacked high with boxes. He was trying to navigate the cart delicately through all the crowds of people dashing by. No one took much time to notice him. As he pushed the cart down a slight curb, four of the boxes toppled over onto the street.…

Any list of the powerful is subjective, but the people here have an outsize influence on the nation’s rules and culture." The article looks at the faces of the the most powerful people the Times has identified. It is interesting to see white power describe white power as white, then seemingly lament the lack of diversity. It seems disingenuous to me; designed more to gra…

  31. What determines how long we’ll live? Surprisingly, our zip code plays a large role. Not all communities have the necessary ingredients for health. People who reside in areas without easy access to healthy food options, parks for exercise, and good schools for their children have shorter lives than those who live in more affluent communities. Differences across neighborhoods were manmade and can be unmade, but it will take all of us. The California Endowment’s 10-year Building Healthy Communities initiative seeks to bring equity to all neighborhoods so that all Californians can enjoy the benefits of healthy communities and live long and productive lives.

After all of the protesting and violence over the last five years to stir up people about the gaps in income inequality, Blacks are still the poorest of the poor and Whites are now officially on notice of the imminent economic destruction of White civilization. “Federal regulators say five of the biggest banks in the U. Even our convoluted process of; determining your district, getting the ballot, filling out the ballot, and finally scanning it went quickly, simply because no one else was ahead of me. Interestingly, I did not have to show any form of identification. Given the scrawl that I use as my signature, I'm confident virtually anyone could walked in and voted in my place.
