No, I am not talking about the questionable activity of send money to strangers. I am talking about using the tools 🛠 available here on AALBC. I just used my Libro.fm membership to send a Mother to be in the Caribbean a gift of my audiobook Auntie I Don’t Want You To Get Married. I would love ❤️ if you considered my work as a gift to give.

Hello Folks: After three years, I had to close my book storefront upstart in South Jersey. While I miss it, I don't regret closing because, at this stage of my life, I could not wait on an upturn in the market... Anyway, I doubled down on my online store with marketing and social media posts. Outcomes are fair, but still nothing to write about at length. At least not yet. I also challenged myself to attend book fairs in 2025 to vend, market my business, and learn more about the used book/antiquarian market. It was a rewarding endeavor, too! I met some great people in the business, and I have some return venues listed for next year. Anyway, I am still putting …

Throughout the annals of time, everyone from poets to poor men, from scholars to fools have preached, ranted or raved about how strong love is. I agree with the sentiment that love is indeed powerful. In fact, love is perhaps the most potent elixir on the planet, a gift from the Creator. And who is it that can argue about the beauty of love, or dispute the joy of love when it is new. Ahh, when love is new! Throughout the history of mankind, love has withstood the test of time like no other concept known to humans. it has conquered where the sword has failed. It has come through as an agent of change like nothing else before it. Love has been an one-of-an-kind experie…

Community Book Center, cultural hub of black community, fighting to stay open BY KATY RECKDAHL | Special to The New Orleans Advocate, June 10, 2017 This article is worth reading because it speaks to the fight many are activity engaged in to serve our communities from a cultural perspective. If we all a profit driven corporations from outside our community do this on our behalf we are lost as a people and will suffer more than we already do. This article really raises the question I asked in another post about the viability of a book store focused on Black books; are they desired by enough people in the Black community to make it a available busine…

Say what you will about the blockbuster film Black Panther, love it or hate it, I could care less, you cannot deny it’s brilliance. And that brilliance begins with the emergence of Erik Killmonger. A young man driven, not just by his hatred of the oppressors of black people, but by the animosity of those that live with peace in the private kingdom of Wakanda. I believe a lot of writers could learn a great deal from a character like Killmonger. Marvel purposely set out for everyone to feel compassion for the bad guy. That was a new twist in itself. Marvel wanted you to understand, to relate, to fear the bad guy’s demise. They gave Erik, what so many others did not have, a …

This journey between a mother and daughter is guaranteed to lead to positive feelings like confidence and self-acceptance. “Little Lady Rose” illustrates that experiences, coupled with an adults encouragement and support, will foster a child’s self-esteem. I realize that 7 of 10 girls believe they are not good enough or do not measure up in some way, including their looks, performance in school and relationships wit…

This week, we hired greater than a dozen guest writers for O.W., during a recession. God is good! Regardless, I have encountered a deeply perplexing question posed by a newly appointed staff writer who recently accepted an assignment (actual email photo). https://owshowe.com/2020/06/12/black-or-african-american/ *sorry @Troy for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to post the actual pic, don't judge me people. How would YOU answer this question and why? Honestly, it gave me pause; both as a black (or African American) woman, veteran (2 services) and little sister to four amazing older brothers. Thus far, the response from my close communi…

Forthcoming new novel by award-winning author Clarence Major seeks reviews -- contact info@manicdpress.com -- here's some info: “Clarence Major’s fiction has amazed me for years. And now The Lurking Place. This novel captures the late sixties in subtle ways that we seldom read. Major assumes the character of this narrator completely and fully, giving himself at once the narrative distance and fictive detachment required to render this story with building tension and expectancy. A wonderful addition to an already substantial oeuvre.” —Percival Everett, author of The Trees What happens when the drive to succeed professionally collides with ambition…

Continued from Part One In order to give life and purpose to the three faceless mermaids that hang on my wall, I had to first give them names. Shimmer, StarFire, and SeaStar came to life in my literary vision. I could see them at long last and they were beautiful, brown-skinned,orphaned, mermaid sisters. They reached out to me every time I passed their stilled images on the wall. I had to tell their story. The voice that continually awakened me up in the middle of the night, beckoned me to write a book. Always three and four o’clock in the morning, I could be found in my dimly lit bedroom frantically writing. The question that plagued my thoughts was this: What w…

Nehemiah Garvey is a man of faith and a high school basketball star in Newark, New Jersey. It's the 1960s and the city has been torn apart by riots (or rebellions, depending on one's perspective). Nehemiah and Mickey undertake some basketball diplomacy to help turn Newark's reputation around. Mickey keeps the reins and with Nehemiah leading the community on and off the court, the team launches a bid to win the consensus …

Remember just before Christmas when I said Santa was bringing me a Kindle but I was unsure if I really wanted one? Well, it’s taken a couple of months but I’m liking it! It’s still not pretty like a book but the convenience of carrying a 500+ page book in my purse along with LOTS of other books just waiting for me to read – SCORE! I got the Kindle Reader and the giftor acknowledged that the Fire would be overkill for me and I crocheted a cover for it so it wouldn’t be quite so ugly. Next up – some sort of ‘smart phone’ I guess. Not that I really need one but I’m tired of telling folks to stay out of my business when they talk about my antique flip-top phone…

Keisha’s Mama Is So Fine – Free Limited Time Someone in high school always had a mother that drove the teenage boys wild and in Derrick Lacy’s school it was Janice Thompson. Janice was the mother of his childhood friend Keisha, who was a cheerleader. All the other boys would ask who Janice was when she came to sporting events and Derrick would tell them she was Keisha’s mama. The other boys would respond with, “Keisha’s Mama Is So Fine.” Sixteen years later Derrick found himself in a most unusual situation with Janice who was a still beautiful fifty year old woman and he was a thirty-three year old man. As they looked into each others’ eyes would they cross that lin…

Poets and Writers Article by Elizabeth Nunez, "Widening the Path: The Importance of Publishing Black Writers " "Many black writers have not been as fortunate. It was not a renaissance after all, that booming interest in books by black writers in the 1990s. It was a passing fad, like last season’s fashionable style in clothes, replaceable when publishers, their eyes on the exotic, “discover” an untapped ethnic group among writers of color." The above quote, from the article, about the rise in the popularity of Black books during the 1990s being a “fad” was interesting. I guess given how short-lived the so-called renaissance was, the term is appropriate. But…
