Right now I only have one set of a three book series of Tonya Bolden’s Powerful Series: Buy all three books get 10% off, free shipping, no sales tax*: ONLY ONE LEFT! First is her Civil War novel, Crossing Ebenezer Creek; followed by, Inventing Victoria, set during Reconstruction and the rise of Jim Crow; the third novel is Saving Savannah, the story of a steely young woman desperate for her past not to define her future. I posted this deal on social media before posting it here -- I'm slipping! In fact, I should have only posted it here and on the “Book Alley” discussion forum on Lip Stick Alley.

We lost a lot of good people on 2021. It seems like there were just so many compared to previous years. This past fall, it seemed like someone was passing every other week. Many of the people below I've come to know over the years; several images from the collage below are photos I've taken. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list. If you are know of an important writer, or person who published a book, who passed last year please reply with their names and a link to their obituary or AALBC page. ▪ Floyd Cooper (Jan 8, 1956 – Jul 15, 2021), Award Winning Children’s Book Illustrator ▪ …

"Top Ten Reasons Why African American Bookstores Are Closing" by Gwen Richardson: http://aalbc.com/blog/index.php/2012/03/25/death-of-the-black-owned-independent-bookstore/ Gwen has actually been running an on-line book store Cushcity.com almost as long as I have been running ALBC.com. Her brick and mortar book store in Houston predates the website, though I forget how long it has been open. Gwen and I collaborate on advertising sales, and the National Black Book Festival. This list is complied from a series of post Gwen made on her Facebook profile. She agreed to let me share her thoughts with AALBC.com visitors. I think there are pro…

I think I had better chill for a minute with my posts but wanted to get this parting shot in. The Root of All Evil is about a fact that many are already aware of. It deals with what happened in 1933 in this country. That was the year America went bankrupt. They owed money to the Illuminati and other international bankers. The country had no gold or silver left so when the international bankers wanted their money and there was none, America had to cough up some collateral. The President declared a national emergency and a meeting was held for all the governors from all the states. They had to come up with a plan to save the country. They had to pay back their foreign inves…

Re-post “Why didn’t you make the mermaids White?” he said. “You would sell more books if they were white.” These words still echo in my head. Everything had seemingly come together. At the onset of my dream to bring Shimmer, StarFire, and SeaStar to life, my research directed me to Archway Publishing’s Author Solutions, a division of Simon and Schuster. I went online completely ignorant of what it would take to become a published author. I did know, however, that as a first time, no name, writer, I didn’t stand a chance of getting a literary agent to even think about considering my work. Self-Publishing was my only option if ever I wanted my three mermai…

....just in time for Black History Month Seriously, I can see the appeal for both books. Like most literate Americans I read To Kill a Mockingbird. I saw the film as well, and enjoyed both. Until now Lee never published another book. This book was written before Mockingbird, but was originally rejected by publishers. Wilder wrote Little House on the Prairie, which was also a popular TV series. I did not read her book, or enjoy the TV series, but millions of other people did. Today Amazon sells about 75% of the new books sold online. All indications are this trend will continue in their favor. If anyone believes this is a good thing, the…

Award winning author, Marlon James says, as reported in The Guardian's article: 'Writers of colour pander to the white woman' The 2015 Man Booker prize winner Marlon James has slammed the publishing world, saying authors of colour too often “pander to white women” to sell books, and that he could have been published more often if he had written “middle-style prose and private ennui”. At a sold-out Guardian event on Friday night, James said publishers too often sought fiction that “panders to that archetype of the white woman, that long-suffering, astringent prose set in suburbia. You know, ‘older mother or wife sits down and thinks about her horrible lif…

Synopsis Throughout history nations have formed through mutual unity, willful emigration and geographical isolation. This is not the case for most African countries. Africa’s colonization was arrogantly bombarded with western civilization in an attempt to siphon her resources and destabilize the cultural structure of African settlements. The consequences of that colonization will have lingering effect on the continent. The African youth and generations to come will continue to pay a price with their blood or rewrite their own history. Ibitimi Stephens, a concerned statesman, embarks on a journey to fight for a cause: to form a micro nation. His e…

There are more books featuring Black children than any time in history. I'm talking about new books and backlist titles still in print. The books shown in the video below is just the tip of the iceberg. Learn more about this list. I can remember a time when it was possible to know not every new Black children's book, but all of the Black children's books still in print! Right now I try to make sure all of the "good" ones are on the site. In the near future I'd like to have an exhaustive list of all the Black books ever published by a major house, whether they are in print or not. While my list does include indie books, I have no plans to coll…

...did not impress me. I went to Borders on Friday. Given recent events here, I had to check out the African American section. Neat as a pin - not a hint of racist disorder. I noticed right away that there were more titles by Zane and Noire than by any of the high-brow authors. I had never gotten a look at a Zane book before, so my curiosity was piqued. I passed over Purple Panties - there was no way I was going to risk someone I knew seeing me holding that one - and settled on Addicted (if I remember correctly). That seemed like a title you could explain later as long as your friend didn't get close enough to know better. I thumbed through the book quickly, and…

THE ‘H’ MAN BRINGS THE HEAT By Alina Oswald, Beyond Race Magazine 7/06 H is for Heat. H is for Harlem. H is for HICKSON, a native of Harlem with an ear for the heated stories of the inner city and with a few tales of his own. “Harlem is where the heart is,” 36-year-old HICKSON says, willing to talk just about everything but his first name (which, at least for now, remains a mystery). He graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1998, with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Advertising and Marketing Communications. While attending college on a full-time basis, HICKSON also worked as a freelance fashion stylist, a job that led to a wa…

I wouldn't go with you if you were the last dog on Earth." ### I'd had a crush on "Hannah" (not her real name) for years, and finally asked her to "go" with me (our middle school version of "going steady.") And at the end of the next school day, as promised, she passed me that note, all the girls in class giggling at my humiliation. I felt like a crushed bug. We all know what it feels like to get our guts kicked out, and that was my first…

I actually did my best to ignore this story, but I'm on social media and it is really difficult to filter out these types of stories. I know some will be offended by that statement; "Troy how can you be so insensitive to Black women being kicked off the train for being too loud--they could be you wife, your sister, you mother, your daughters." I know, I know, but honestly I can't get too bent out of shape about these situations. So much worse happens everyday that is completely ignored But I broke down and decided to check out one of the articles linked from Facebook and I and came across this photo. I immediately recognized at least three of the women. One is a publ…

Wow! Every man should read this with shame; every woman with pride. I can count on one hand the number of books that changed my viewpoint and altered my thinking on a subject I felt I knew extensively - The Civil Rights Movement. In response to the #metoo awareness, I wanted to find a read that was geared towards the topic of abuse, rape, degradation and the defilement of women. I had previously read “Women who run with wolves,” so that's where I started my search. A great book, but I wanted something different. And different I found (thanks Goodreads). read more... purchase
