DON’T TAKE ME ALIVE 1972 Bank Job Five minutes after my eyes opened, I made a phone call to my partner and sighed in relief to discover that our heist was still on for this morning. I inwardly applauded our plan to get some paper and I crossed my fingers, hoping that the bank would be loaded with cash because at nineteen, I was sick and tired of being broke. I had grown weary of praying to God to let a sack of cash fall off the back of a Wells Fargo truck so I had resolved to end my career as a broke nigga and today was the first day for the rest of my life. And as my own financial strategist, all roads led to the North Carolina National Bank. Having made…

I'll Take You There: Mavis Staples, the Staple Singers, and the March up Freedom's Highway by Greg Kot This is the untold story of living legend Mavis Staples—lead singer of the Staple Singers and a major figure in the music that shaped the civil rights era. Now in her seventies, Mavis has been a fixture in the music world for decades. One of the most enduring artists of popular music, she and her family fused gospel, soul, folk, and rock to transcend racism and oppression through song. Honing her prodigious talent on the Southern gospel circuit of the 1950s, Mavis and the Staple Singers went on to sell more than 30 million records, with message-oriented soul music t…

Here is another Brother, J. Marcellus Burke, I met during our annual Black Pack Party. He wrote what sounds like an interesting novel, The Black Knights. Which is fact based story about four fighter pilots serving in the German Air Force (Lufwaffe). His publisher, Bennett Johnson, who was also at the party (shown in the photo with me below) has an even more impressive resume. Bennett was Vice President of the Third World Press Foundation, President of the Evanston Branch of the NAACP and much much more. These brothers are both well into their 80's and still gettin' it in!

Now for anyone writing a book or screenplay, this is a great opportunity to learn from Tananarive Due, writer of the Reformatory and the cowriter of the Twilight Zone episode " A Small Town" side her husband Steven Barnes. From Steven Barnes of Lifewriting People have called Tananarive the "Queen of Black Horror." Her latest book, THE REFORMATORY, has sold more copies than anything in her career - and we're in post-production on our first horror short film, THE KEEPER. We've taught thousands of writing students, and we're ready to expose three lies that keep writers struggling to reach their dreams to write horror that haunts and sells. Why ‘talent’ is a myth …

By now the crowd of people slamming Tyler Perry’s movies and television programs as minstrel shows could fill a large theater. One critic of his film version of FOR COLORED GIRLS called him ‘the king of coonery’. These people are, of course, wrong. Historically, minstrel shows flourished from the mid 19th century through the early 20th century. They were, for the most part, the products of white showmen using white performers in black face and were directed, overwhelmingly, at white audiences. Their function was to justify cradle to grave segregation, sanctified in law and enforced by violence, by presenting blacks as shiftless dimwits and vulgar brutes, properly kept o…

The author, Deggans, is a popular critic out of Tampa Bay' Race-Baiter: How the Media Wields Dangerous Words to Divide a Nation by Eric Deggans Hardcover: 288 pages Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan (October 30, 2012) Gone is the era of Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite, when news programs fought to gain the trust and respect of a wide spectrum of American viewers. Today, the fastest-growing news programs and media platforms are fighting hard for increasingly narrow segments of the public and playing on old prejudices and deep-rooted fears, coloring the conversation in the blogosphere and the cable news chatter to distract…

We have three main challenges facing the Black book world; 1 - The Economy 2 - Corporate Control of the Web 3 - Waning Literacy To help combat these trends we've spent most of the Summer creating free utilities on the Huria Search web site. All of this information and content can be added to any website with just a few lines of code. The idea is to help elevate and promote independent websites. At the end of the day, fewer places selling Black books means few books will be sold. Fewer books being sold will result in fewer books being produced, published and ultimately read. Individual authors, even in a social media world, can’t take up the slack. These t…

If you pay attention to our media you may have concluded that there is a black male crisis in America. We are constantly inundated with images of black men as lazy, irresponsible thugs, deadbeat dads and "playas" who only think about listening to rap music, chasing women and blaming society for their failures. But is this the only reality for black men? Are black men really an endangered species? Contrary to negative media generated stereotypes it is my belief that there is no black male crisis and the future for black men is actually bright with lots of reasons for optimism. For some, this statement is a denial of the challenges facing black men. To which I reply, I…

African-American Booksellers Look For a Turnaround By Judith Rosen Feb 14, 2014 The number of black bookstores has declined precipitously since 2002, when the American Booksellers Association counted 300 members. Today there are fewer than 100, according to Troy Johnson, president of the African American Literary Book Club (AALBC.com), who maintains a list by state. But with the opening of Black Stone Bookstore and Cultural Center in Ypsilanti, Mich., in November, the projected opening of Ancestry Books in Minneapolis in June, and MahoganyBooks.com looking to open a physical bookstore by 2016, it’s possible that things are changing. As a volunteer placed in the townships of Cape Town, he found himself questioning the meaning of life and God's mercy. The following was a bulletin board at from this year's (2013) Brooklyn Book Festival (click here fore more photos a few videos). It struck me because the question was a popular one here so I figured I kick it off here :-) My little sticky shows the book I last read, which was Jaron Lanier's Who Owns the Future. Honestly, the last book I actually finished was H.N.I.C. by Prodigy, but I did not feel like mentioning it. The book was fine, but not really suited for me. I imagine a teenager would enjoy it. I would certainly recommended it to a high school student it is a very quick read.

THE GIBRALTAR WRITING STYLE THE WRITER’S EDGE 1 PRELUDE 2 WRITING Let’s take a moment to deal with what I call “the blank page syndrome”. Just what is this syndrome, you ask? Well, it is the transition your book takes from being an actual mental byproduct into becoming an actual physical product, but before you jot down a single, solitary word on paper, you must understand how to bridge this gap between the mental and the physical; this yawning chasm where you will be compelled to make bricks without straw. What process do you employ to fling open the floodgates of your inner creativity? More importantly, how do you defea…
