I'm not ordinarily impressed with urban lit, but a novel of this genre was my book club's selection for this month, so I dutifully undertook the task that would allow me to participate in the group discussion that would take place at an upcoming meeting. The book was written by Carl Weber, who I am vaguely familiar with, and it is entitled "Up To No Good". In the version I had, the text was in large print and I'm sure this contributed to my finding it an easy read. My old eyes need all the help they can get. As I got into this tale of contemporary black life, the next thing I found encouraging was that the book had obviously been proof-read and edited. So I …

This film delves into the radical history of Britain's first black bookshop which was founded by John La Rose and Sarah White in 1966. As well as creating a much needed space for black communities to access and publish their own literature, it helped support important campaigns such as the Caribbean Artists Movement, the Black Parents Movement as well as playing a pivotal role in the historic Black Peoples Day of Action. Decades on, 'New Beacon Books' is still a functioning bookshop but in a world of Amazon and Kindles can it really survive forever?

In a time when an increasing number of authors are resorting to Facebook, or Amazon, as their primary web platform, it is refreshing to see an author establish their own web presence. @Cerece Rennie Murphy is one prime example. Cerece recently took advantage of our Fall Book Special. I'm not just the type to place an ad and forget about it. I actually check out the author's work and even provide unsolicited suggestions from time to time. From my perspective it is a long term relationship not merely an anonymous financial transaction... but I digress. After checking out Cerece's website, watching a couple of videos in her "For Authors" section, I came across he…

Hello, I'm writing from the University of Michigan Press with a book that should be of interest to your readers. Condition Red collects writing by one of America’s most gifted and revered poets, Pulitzer Prize winner Yusef Komunyakaa. While themes from his earlier prose collection, Blue Notes (which I believe you also reviewed), run through Condition Red, this volume expresses a greater sense of urgency about the human condition and the role of the artist. Condition Red includes his powerful letter to Poetry magazine, asserting that “we writers (artists) cannot forget that we are responsible for what we conjure and embrace through language, whether in essays, novels…

My name is G. Barton-Sinkia and I am the author of By The Next Pause (ISBN9781775210221). The novel is scheduled for worldwide publication on June 20, 2018. I wanted to touch base with you to see if AALBC would be interested in reading and reviewing my book. Based on the books your site has selected and the reaction of my current ARC reviewers, I am confident that you and your subscribers will find By The Next Pause a page-turner. I would love to send you a copy for you to review. Please advise on how I can make that possible. In the meantime, below is a short blurb about my novel. Thank you for your time and I look forward to speaking with you soon! …

I found my aalbc.com forum entries on muckrackdotcomforwardslashmelhyphenhopkins Now this wouldn't be a problem if I took the time to proofread, fact check (ok, I do) and format my comments- but I take a more casual approach when I post here. Further, I don't expect someone to use my aalbc comments as a sample of my published writing. BUT Muckrack dot com is also a content aggregation website that collects articles written by journalists. The LinkedIN MuckRack dot com company page states it's a public relations management platform tool offered to PR professionals who want to pitch to journalists. Now this is a great business model, as it saves time for bo…

I admit, inspired by the replies offline or online from Black people of multiple gender/age/language/religion/ or other non phenotypical racial category in the usa. I realized a nice little game. I will list some tribes in the Black Village in the USA and anyone interested in playing need to take the list and place the fictional book they have read that reflects the goals or ideas of their philosophy. You can leave a tribe space blank, if you can't think of a book of fiction that fits. Militants < Kill whitey>: Rematriots < Back to Africa or garveyites>: Integrationists <integrate peacefully into white communit…

There is a non-fiction book made into a movie called The Free State of Jones: Mississippi's Longest Civil War by Victoria E Bynum. It documents the true story of how Captain Newt Knight and Jones County Mississippi broke away from the Confederacy during the Civil War. Knight felt that it was a war that was fought on behalf of the Southern planter aristocracy(slaveholders) and disadvantaged many of the poorer soldiers who were actually on the battlefield fighting the war. As a result of deserting the war, he was considered a fugitive hiding with runaway slaves. The biography of Newt Knight has a very personal application to m…

I am quite sure that many of us have heard this before. The challenges facing minority authors, black authors in particularly seem overwhelming. Like many black people, I grew up watching many of those early science fiction movies and television programs. The Day The Earth Stood Still, They Came From Outer Space, Lost In Space and my all time favorite…Star Trek (The Original Series) were my favorites. I never bothered with diversity questions until I entered high school during the early 1970s. Like many teens during those integration years, I became deeply affected by the lack of diversity in subsequent science fiction movies and television programs. I loved the origin…

Recently I came across two really attractive book covers. Of course perceived attractiveness is purely subjective, but I think most folks will find images on these covers attractive. Of course we can argue about the relative merits of each cover regarding how well they relate to, or convey, the book's contents. In an online world we could also have to consider how well each cover looks when it is scaled down to thumbnail size. But right now I'm just talking about the visual appeal of the books in isolation, independent of the book's contents. Do they pique your interest? Do you want to know what each book is about? The book on the left is collection…

I read this poem or story in junior high school in an anthology. It has always been influential on me, but I can't find it. The poem or story describes two men, one black, one white, who approach each other on a road. The white man displays ignorance, the black man remains composed, rational, and immune to the ignorant insults. Like a Black Vulcan: "Well you a n----- ain't you?" "My ancestors were called by that word." "And you can't marry my sister!" "Having never met your sister, I don't feel deprived by that." The story taught me at age 12 that an ignorant person can't define me, they can only define themselves. That idea has always immunized me …

My name is Anita Wills and I am a Writer and Author of 6 books. My first book was published in 2004 and is titled Notes and Documents of Free Persons of Color. Several Years later I revised Notes and Documents and updated the information. My books deal mainly with the communities that my ancestors lived in during the Colonial Period and through the Civil War. Notes and Documents of Free Persons of Color documents the history of Mulattos Coloreds Negroes and Blacks in Virginia. They were a Quasi-free population who were subjected to the racism and oppression of European Whites. One of the females in Notes and Documents was the granddaughter of William Monroe Senior (The g…

I read this review and immediately thought of @Pioneer1 "Professor Banks concentrates his book on interviews with middle class black women, who he says are the most likely to be unwed of any group in the country..." "Feminist leader Gloria Steinem knew just how to piss off and intimidate white men in power when she showed up in Newsweek, at the start of the Women’s Liberation Movement, with her “boyfriend,” the very dark, handsome, well-sculpted, black Olympic star Rafer Johnson."

I really wish I had the funding to determine the percentage of books, written by Black writers, that are sold, often exclusively, by Amazon. My conservative estimate would be at least 75%, but I would not be surprised if it were 90%. We know; By the fall of 2016, the share of online shoppers bypassing search engines and heading straight to Amazon had grown to 55 percent. Captures nearly $1 of every $2 that Americans spend online. Hosts a substantial portion of the largest websites Ships and sells products at a loss until competition is eliminated (the capital markets facilitate this, which also prevents the emergence new potentia…

Hi! I'm Bryan D. Covington, author of Between Magic and Dreams. I am submitting my novel for a book review. It's a fantasy piece about a college student fighting to preserve our reality during the rebirth of forgotten times through a phenomenon known as the New Light. This is book one of a trilogy. Book two is already underway. A quick synopsis: Kwen Phifer planned to spend the last few weeks of college chumming it up with the career counselor and winding down once finals were over but, unfortunately for him, those plans fail to come to fruition. He's been approached by someone that explains how he had been chosen to halt an oncoming cataclysm. He lacks skill, expe…

I just added this book to our store. The In a promotional video the author tells us who marries more outside the race. She also says that she sees nothing wrong with Black people marrying outside your race unless it comes from a place of self loathing -- then it is bad. Self loathing is bad in and of itself, but I'm not sure how one tells the difference in the context of a marriage. I have not read the book, nor am I academic who has studied the subject for more than a decade. I wonder if the author is married.

justsomeguy suggest the trend in gaming, to "defeminize" female characters is a problem. The problem is media concerns have one goal. To make money, but large media concerns have a problem. Humanity has money in all sectors of humanity but these sectors biases, negative or positive, means nothing can serve all communities. So, the big money concerns choose the communities they will favor, but that leads to automatic admonishment from those not catered to, who also have money.
