A Perfect Gift! Go inside the mind of a master storyteller through his own words and art. Order now The Graphomaniac's Primer: A Semi-Surrealist Memoir is a chronicle about my journey on the page through drawings, thoughts and memories. Here is a summary of the book and a link to Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Weeping-Time-Largest-Auction-American/dp/1316643484/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497538883&sr=8-1&keywords=The+Weeping+TIme In 1859, at the largest recorded slave auction in American history, over 400 men, women, and children were sold by the Butler Plantation estates. This book is one of the first to analyze the operation of this auction and trace the lives of slaves before, during, and after their sale. Immersing herself in the personal papers of the Butlers, accounts from journalists that witnessed the auction, genealogical records, and oral histories, Anne C. Bailey weaves toge…

From the article which appears in The Atlantic: “Indeed, the FBI’s war against black bookstores represents a sad chapter in the history of law enforcement in the U.S., a time when federal agents dispensed with all notions of freedom of speech as they targeted black entrepreneurs and their customers for buying and selling literature they deemed politically subversive.” Of course this is just one part of a multifaceted campaign to crush the Black community. Growing up in the 'hood we saw this assault first hand. The article mentions Una Mulzac's store in Harlem. Una was still running the store even after I started AALBC.…

The publisher of this book, Blue Nile Press, is one of the most conscious Black-owned publishing companies I'm aware of. They are the first publisher to print a book with the AALBC.com Bestseller seal on it. Besides the fact that the book is an AALBC Best Seller it provides an additional incentive for me to promote and sell the book. In June I will be in Austin, TX presenting at the Austin African American Book Festival. I will be selling this book and any other AALBC bestselling books who have the seal on it. Peace, Troy

I'm starting a major overhaul of the AALBC website. The designers felt it was time for a logo "refresh." Here is an option I'm currently considering. This will be the 4th logo change in 25 years. Here are the previous logos. The logo will inform the look and feel of the new design, so it is important. I considered more radical redesigns but rejected them, as I did not want to stray too far from the current design and make the brand unrecognizable. Let me know what you think.

I just published the November/December 2016 bestsellers list. Children's books really dominated the list this two month period. There are hundreds of different titles sold each period, most of them only sell one or two copies, but there were scores of excellent children's books which sold several copies.

The New York Post reported yesterday; "Colin Kaepernick has inked a book deal worth just over $1 million with Random House imprint One World, Page Six has exclusively learned. One World’s headed by book world superstar Chris Jackson, who also publishes Jay-Z and Ta-Nehisi Coates. He launched One World last year." One World was founded in 1992 and was on the leading edge of imprints created to meet the demand of books dedicated to African Americans; a period which only lasted about a decade. One World has been relaunched, and Chris Jackson has been named Publisher and editor-in-chief of One World, which arguably makes him the most powerful Black man…

Barracoon: The Story of the Last “Black Cargo” by Zora Neale Hurston is a never-before-published but which tells the story of a Brother you endured the middle passage -- yes the Middle Passage! He was kidnapped from African 50 years after the practice was outlawed and enslaved in the American south... those slavers really were devils huh?

RMNewsletter 4th Version Thoughts 01/19/2025 I am nearly finished a book review, so hopefully it will come out soon. I admit, I didn't take my usual December break and feel the need in January. You can scroll to last week on the work calendar to see a more fulfilling week. I have enjoyed the Lucy Worsley series so far. I advice all women to check out the Jack the Ripper, the video + transcript is available. The Afrofuturism is free to view, I also added some graphical notes in the post writers. Author Juliette Akinyi Ochieng, aka blogger "Baldilocks," says her book, Tale of the Tigers, has sold 23 copies on Amazon in the 11 months since it was released (can't tell if it's been on Amazon that long). Its current sales rank is #10,139 overall and #9 in sports fiction. That appears to indicate that 99.9 percent of Amazon books have sold fewer than two dozen copies in the past year.

Here is a summary of my relative book versus eBook sales from Amazon's affiliate program for 2009 through 2013. The graph does not reveal revenue generated or units sold, but it does show the mix of book, ebooks and other everything else sold, via the Amazon affiliate program, over the last 5 years. Interpret the graph this way, if I sold 100 products in 2009, 81 of them would have been books, one would have been an eBook and 18 would have been anything from a curling iron to a flash drive. You can see that eBooks, as a percentage of everything else sold, has not changed from 2012 to 2013. The explosive growth of ebooks relative to physical books, on AALBC.c…

Despite the difficult circumstances, every individual has the desire to succeed. If you are in need of an extra push, guidance, or are seeking an encouraging word, this is the book for you. …whenever someone prefaces a statement with, “This might sound racist…” you know to brace yourself for a racist statement. But I look at a LOT or books over the course of my day. Naturally, one notices trends and patterns, real and imagined, as one examines large numbers of books over time. One trend I've noticed, for example, is a surge in interest in Children's books. This is a great trend because there has been so much discussion on the lack of diversity in children's literature, that it actually crowded out discussion about the great literature that exists. Another trend I noticed is that corporate publishing seems to be veering even further way from publ…

Hello, My name is John Van Roekel. I’m a 62 year-old white guy who in 1994 read a biography of Teddy Roosevelt that described his experiences with the African-American 9thand 10th Cavalry Regiments during the Spanish-American War. I was so impressed with the story of these men that I naively decided to write a novel about a young black man serving in the 9th Cavalry. After years of research, writing classes, and trips to Fort Robinson, Nebraska, the Wounded Knee site in South Dakota, and to the San Juan Hill battle site in Cuba, Braver Deeds is the result. So, what do African-American readers think about a well-meaning white man writing a novel mainly about Af…

I learned from a local journalist and author Cheryl Wills, of New York City's NY1 that Rosa Guy passed recently. I don't know the exact date, but I believe it was within the past week. Rosa was a Harlem based author, and literary activist. Her first book was published in the mid 60's (I believe), she co-founded the Harlem Writer's Guild. She was also a member of a Black nationalist literary organization, On Guard for Freedom. She is definitely, as I would say, "An Author You Should Know". Cheryl's TV station did a segment on Rosa Guy but I missed it. I've been searching the net for over 24 hours and I have yet to see a mention of Rosa's passing. If I have not …
