THE SPERLING CHRONICLES 3: NO TEARS FOR DEAD MEN by Dilsa Saunders Bailey ENOUGH - Awakening in a dark, musty room with a headache the size of Philadelphia, Kali’s first thought was the word, ‘KIDNAPPED.’ It permeated her body as if an alarm was pulled too late to warn of impending danger. She remembered tripping over something before her knees began to buckle and her world turned instantly black. What was it? Who was it? She winced from the pain on the side of her face as the memory of blood and bodies on her living room floor flashed in her mind. Was her daughter Kacie in there, too? Who was the blame for this? What did they want from them this t…

The Caldecott Medal, established in 1938. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. The award was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. Perhaps this explains why, in 83 years of handing out the award, only 4 Black illustrators have won the medal. OK, that last sentence was a bit snarkier than necessary, but let's be clear, the reason so few Black illustrators have been honored with this award is racism. Racism is so deeply embedded in our culture that th…

Divine Consciousness, From a Dystopian Diaspora to Afrofuturism is a compelling, must-read available now from artGriot® Publishing. This book considers the past in confronting the present while preparing for our future. Our past and present have been subjugated, in part, by a decidedly human threat from those in control. Dystopian societies are marked by mass suffering and great injustice but are not just relegated to stories of fiction. We have been and continue to be in a dystopian state throughout the Diaspora. However, we don’t have to remain trapped in this state, nor consider that our ability to finally overcome could only exist in a distant future. We m…

“Boy, don't you go down there fuckin' with them Jews without no money!” —Richard Pryor I always think of this line whenever someone mentions Jewish people in the content of power. The following is a paragraph from a very interesting article “TOWARD THE NEXT LITERARY MAFIA” In the first decade of the 20th century, it was both virtually impossible and virtually unheard of for a Jewish person, irrespective of their individual talents, to be hired for any job at a major American publishing company—even if they were Ivy League graduates, heirs to family fortunes, and had brilliant literary minds. They couldn’t get hired on the editorial staff of a…

I tried to tell yawl about WBP+1.That be white boy power plus 1 light skin brotha. See, since this is not a post-post-racial America. There's only one way I pick my Final 4. Well, first I count the number of white boys on the team. Then I look to see how many of them are part of the starting 5. Now I move to the coach. If the coach has a last name that's hard for me to pronounce, he, and the team are in my Final 4. But don't hate me, hate the players. I mean, I'm from Iowa and white boys have been kicking my ass since grade school. Are you kidding me, they all have a hoop in their driveway or in their back yards. That's why they can't jump but can hit th…

CHAPTER TWO THE LEARNING CURVE Sometimes, the real key is not learning what to learn, but learning what not to learn! Wise people have always known this and it is oftentimes the most powerful aspect of an education. Without a doubt, education is within the grasp of everyone, but without discipline and insight you may end up an educated fool or worse. In the case of the black women in America, there has been long periods of time when she has had to unlearn what she had learned and the most damning lesson she has had to unlearn was that she was not beautiful. Attempting to live up to the Euro-centric concept of beauty has tended to squeeze so much valuabl…

Today on a whim I decided to see how much effort it would take to compile a list of all the Black writers to win a Pulitzer Prizes in the book-related categories. My list even includes the awards for drama, since all of the plays are available in book form. Since they have been giving the award away for a century, I figured this effort would take considerable effort to complete. Sadly, it took a few minutes—a slight exaggeration—but far less effort than I expected because the list so short. It took over 70 years for the to award to be given to more than a handful of Black writers. It is possible I may have missed a few. If anyone notices any omissions please let…

I’m certain that we can all agree that although supremely rewarding, writing and taking a book to press is extremely challenging, particularly with the decrease in earnings that have plagued the literary industry for greater than a decade past. Thus, one must pose the question, “how are you employing technology to build your audience of readers?” Quick, I have a few questions to ask: 1. Name five Black animated characters. 2. Okay, now, name three Black (and female) animated characters. I’ll wait... You see, a lion’s share of the projects that we develop for O.W. Showe can be traced back to expanding her audience in…

CHAPTER THREE THE SELF-REINFORCING THEORY When you take a look at your personal history, the one thing you will be forced to contend with is the fact that what you are doing right now is establishing a reputation that is sure to outlive you. Be advised that right now, at this very moment, you are building your legacy. In essence, you are cementing the posterity you will leave behind to be viewed by your loved ones. Long after you are dead and gone, your deeds will continue to testify either for or against you. Oftentimes, the preacher will embellish his eulogy to make you seem more saintly than you actually were, but what will always remain is the ghost…

From Dependency To Freedom But I Still Must Fight As a young man raised in the projects of Atlanta, I had some difficult times. Being exposed to drugs and alcohol at an early age caused me to miss out on opportunities that could have propelled me to success early on in life. I remember, and will never forget, that day; I was 10 years old at the time and I was given alcohol and weed for the first time. Sadly, what I experienced was a common occurrence in the hood — no one thought anything of it. However, for me, that day would actually lead to an addiction by the time I was a senior in high school. Earning a basketball scholarship with an addicti…

Back in March of 2011 I wrote a article attempting to raise awareness about the struggles Black Book Websites. This was in direct reaction to the unexpected and total beat down Google just gave us. as I described in this forum. I did not mention the abrupt and dramatic drop in AALBC.com's traffic from Google search because I did not yet understand that it was not my fault, and I was ashamed of my perceived failure. Again, I'd brought into the assumption that if you fail at SEO (search engine optimization) or SMM (social media Marketing) that the problem was with you. I understand today that this is not true and that excellent businesses are penalized by Goo…

One NOVEMBER 1942 It was one thing to be cold, but quite another to be freezing. Not long ago, Paul Madsen, had been warm and safe. At home. Now he was in New York where his mind raced to find a way to rouse up some inner warmth. With nearly everything else having failed, he imagined himself back at home in England and for a while the charade worked. He forgot about how cold and miserable he actually felt, but within a few seconds a harsh wind soured him on the game he was playing. Yet the blistering cold was not the only difficulty Madsen faced. He was dying, literally falling apart internally at what one doctor had said was a…

I would like to submit this book for review consideration. www.lessonsfromagatheringofmen.com From the back cover: What would happen if men came together and began having a conversation about the changing roles of manhood? What if men stopped talking about sports, politics, sex and making money and began a conversation about creating fulfilling relationships, taking care of their health, creating loving families, developing a spiritual connection that nurtured their souls and making a difference in their communities? This is what men’s work is all about. It’s about engaging men in an authentic dialog about the changing roles of masculinity and providi…
