Q & A WITH HICKSON: CEO OF GHETTOHEAT® AND DC BOOKDIVA, July 2006 I sat down with HICKSON, CEO of GHETTOHEAT® to discuss the book CONVICT’S CANDY, and to get the 411 on his next projects! DC BOOKDIVA: HICKSON, you are the publisher of the newly released book, CONVICT’S CANDY, can you tell our readers a little about GHETTOHEAT® and the book? HICKSON: GHETTOHEAT® is my publishing company which I started on June 4th, 2003. It wasn’t my original plan to pursue, since I was working in the fashion industry at the time. I was working as NAOMI CAMPBELL’s personal wardrobe coordinator for five years, before working as a production coordinator for all of the b…

Tomorrow, my novel, THE TALENTED Xth will be free on Amazon, and I wholeheartedly encourage you to check the work out. Out of my twenty books, this is the one I like most, Well, actually, it is the one I enjoyed writing the most. The novel is about the first gay heavyweight boxing champion of the world. Right now, I think that I should give you a heads-up about the book. As a writer, I enjoy taking risks. In fact, I detest literary limitations and I have no patience for writing how others feel I should write. I have developed my own style of writing which I called "The Gibraltar Method' and this is how I do it. Now, for a bit of background on the book. None …

Above is a clip from the WSJ’s Future of Everything Festival. The festival was held in New York City on May 18, 2022. Here I answer the question, “...what is their biggest complaint about reading...?” Watch the full 30-minute video: https://on.wsj.com/3NZbwrM I was a very cool event and I'm glad I was invited to participate. There was also a area where technology was displayed and demonstrated. I git a much better appreciation for technology and where is going. The technology will make it even easier for marketers and those with malintent to hack into your brain and control your thinking and behavior. We are not ready for this...

Greetings. As a newly admitted member I would like to give thanks for allowing me a place to have a voice. As an author who has been writing for years, and finally deciding to share those writings, in an official way, and at a social level, this forum was most appealing. My reason for authoring books has always been the same. To share the truth. By doing so I know that people will have the ability to make the very best decision they know how to make. And that is all we can do. The COVID-19 Coronavirus, has, from the very beginning, been the denial of information. I know this. Because I have researched, tracked, and monitored, this entire event from its ince…

I came across this phrase in the title of Sly Stone's upcoming Memoir, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin): A Memoir by Sly Stone and Ben Greenman It fell like I should be able to get it, and it is probably something simple -- there must be some mental block. Can sometime tell me what the heck this means please. 🙂

-----Pity poor Tyler Perry! -----I know he’s fabulously rich–but pity him anyway—he get’s no respect -----The language used to attack his film version of FOR COLORED GIRLS is harsh: “Utter failure...”, “suffocating melodrama...”, “...calamitous...”, “...train wreck of a movie...” are a few of the milder comments. His adaptation of the Ntozake Shange play is deemed to have “...wrung the beauty and truth out of the original in almost every possible way...”, and he is accused of indulging “...his worst instincts for melodrama...”. In addition, he is alleged to be “tone deaf...” to the “passion and courage...” of the original work. (Actually two critics accuse him of …

DID YOU KNOW?... By Alina Oswald, A & U Magazine (America’s AIDS Magazine), August 2006 Alina Oswald Talks with Harlem-Based Publisher HICKSON About Getting the Word Out About HIV. Did you know...that HIV circulates in prison through unprotected sex? That condoms are not allowed in prison, in order to not advocate sex? That convicts often use potato chip bags or latex gloves as condoms? They also use Vaseline, which eats out the latex…. That HIV-positive convicts rarely receive treatment? Or when they do, medical professionals do not monitor it? Same goes for hormone therapies for transgenders. That transgender…

This is old news from an article by Jeffrey A. Trachtenberg on thw WSJ.com from August of last year "Kobo's agreement with the American Booksellers Association, the independents' trade group, is effective in October. The deal replaces one between the ABA and Google Inc., GOOG +0.67% which has said it would end an effort to sell e-books through independent booksellers in January 2013, declaring the program had failed to gain traction." The article goes on to say; "Independent booksellers, for their part, will be able to offer their customers e-books outside of the dominant digital booksellers, Amazon.com Inc.'s (AMZN +1.60%) Kindle store; Barnes & Noble …

Good morning, My name is Tyrone Givens/Aha Mena. I have two self published sci fi novels and I wanted to submit both of them for review. I'm an African american writer out of cincinnati but, more than that, i'm an Afrocentric author. I believe that we must teach our children about our history and that we have a duty to prevent them from being convinced that we have no history before the triangle trade. To that end, I have started a series of educational books that are designed as an entertaining metaphor for the rich history of African people. I'm a fan of science fiction, so instead of writing a boring reference tool filled with information that kids would never commit t…

This post was motivated, in part, by another conversation on these forums, “Black Middle Aged Men Invisible? I call BS.” I’m using the world of books to support my argument that Black middle aged men have been so marginalized in our culture; that they have been rendered invisible. I'm hoping this 3 minute video will help drive home my point. Let me know what you think?

I've been involved in a coupe of projects which featured videos on Black books. The clicking the image below will take you to a video of the last project I was involved in. It was the best produced efforts I was personally involved in but it failed to gain any traction. Indeed one author -- not even a celebrity author -- ghosted us when it came time to film her -- a sista I've know years. Tayari Jones, which much better name recognition, whose book we covered here, was far more accommodating. Social sharing did no good. It was as if the social platforms rejected the content. @Pioneer1 this experience speaks to some of the things yo…

I'm featured in this article: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/economy/anti-racist-reading-drove-business-to-black-bookstores-owners-hope-thats-not-the-end-of-the-story Basically white folks decided that they were gonna support Black owned independent bookstores (including AALBC) they infused many struggling stores with much needed capital. My biggest take-away from the whole affair is that Black people really need to consider doing this -- permanently.

How AI-Generated Books Could Hurt Self-Publishing Authors from jane friedman https://janefriedman.com/author/admin/ Just two days after the Maui wildfires began, on Aug. 10, a new book was self-published, Fire and Fury: The Story of the 2023 Maui Fire and its Implications for Climate Change by “Dr. Miles Stones” (no such person seems to exist). I learned about the book from this Forbes article, but by then, am*zon had removed the book from sale. am*zon had no comment for Forbes on the situation. Curious about how far the book might have spread, I did a Google search for the book’s ISBN number (9798856899343). To my surprise, I saw the book was …

Go on Wattpad and see for yourself. About 90% of the most popular romance books written by black women in the last years involve a non black partner and the stats are as high in every other genre, fantasy, science fiction drama quite anything. You can just go check out the most popular books right now. That’s ridiculously high, especially since the other races of women don't do this. Even Asian women have far more books with an Asian male as love interest, and they are supposed to be the self hating demographic. There is even more Asian men in black women fiction than black men as love interest. They also have a very racist depictions of black males chara…

Hello, New member here. I'm in the process of publishing my first novel. As with most things, marketing is very important when you're pushing something new. I'm doing the marketing myself based on a plan I received from a pro in the industry. One thing that's important to get early on is positive feedback on the book like endorsements from established authors. Does anyone know any black authors that are open to reading and endorsing books from new authors? Fantasy authors would be most useful for me since that's the genre I write.

“Character assassination on a massive scale”, “sick cartoons”, those are some of the terms used by blog critics to describe Tyler Perry’s portrayal black men in FOR COLORED GIRLS. The same kinds of comments were made when the orginal opened on the stage years ago. My advice as a black man to other black men is, “lighten up”. The FOR COLORED GIRLS stories are about relationships and are told from the perspective of women. Any set of stories about relationships told from the perspective of women, whether they be Hispanic women, oriental women, Jewish women, or whatever, are going to present men in a problematic light. It’s inherent in the endeavor. The thing to do is not …

As crazy as this might sound: The president of the largest, 2nd oldest, most frequently visited website dedicated to books written by of for African American readers has not read a complete book in the better part of three months. This article was written by a Brother I met at the Black Pack Party this week. Is Black Success Possible without White Infrastructure? by Dr. Obari Adéye Cartman I decided to go the “all Black everything” route last year when I published my book. In the text I encourage us to do for self, so it felt hypocritical to let Amazon make money while I advocate Kujichagulia. I had a vision of becoming a model for large-scale collectively sustained Black success. It was unsettling trying to think examples and only coming up with Marcus Garvey and Tulsa from decades ago and Tyler Perry today. Independent black bookstores are barely surviving, so I dreamed of doing my …

Author: Brianne Joseph, LPI (licensed private investigator) ISBN-13: 978-1537619545 1/29/17 In many communities, a "punk" is someone who sneaks up on you and attacks you when you least expect it. Cancer is definitely a punk. I was shocked and embarrassed with my breast cancer diagnosis. How could I be fabulous with breast cancer? Right? Where’s the power in being sick? For a while, I lived in a darkness so thick I could touch it. Breast cancer introduced me to a level of fear I never imagined I would ever experience. I became depressed and reclusive. I felt…
