Hello All, I just found out that J.D. Salinger, the author of Catcher in the Rye had died at 91, http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100128/ap_en_ot/us_obit_. I read Catcher in the Rye for the first time a few years ago. It was one of the books that had been deemed a "classic" that lived up to the hype. Well, Mr. Salinger, you left a good one behind. Thanks.

It took me 17 years to create the first 1,00 author profiles, but just 8 months to create the next 1,500. Of course the profiles are at varying degrees of completeness at this point, but the scope, and potential of the website has increased by orders of magnitude in recent months Of course I'm at the mercy of big websites like Google and the support of my target audience, but things look promising!

I am seeking a book review of my upcoming novel, Something in Madness, the gripping conclusion to my Southern historical DarkHorse Trilogy. Set in 1865 Mississippi, the story illuminates Reconstruction, one of the darkest and least understood periods in American history and the roots of America’s racial divide. I incorporated details of real events and attitudes from the era, as well as varied points of view — black, white, mixed-race, Native American, male and female — to ground both the characters and the story in reality. Title: Something in Madness (DarkHorse Trilogy, Book 3) Author: Ed Protzel ISBN13: 978-1-952816-10-9 Publication date: Oct. 23…

“We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks The Pool Players Seven at the Golden Shovel We real cool. We Left school. We Lurk late. We Strike straight. We Sing sin. We Thin gin. We Jazz June. We Die soon. I have not hopped on the "celebration" of banned books parade so many booksellers have. I feel like that is something I do every day. This is also why I don't feel the need to do something special for Black History Month. That would be redundant... Anywho, I understand this poem was banned for the sexual connotations associated with the line We Jazz June.

I just blogged about an issue that gets zero attention and that is the virtual extinction of websites dedicated to books by and about Black people. In fact there are very few websites dedicated to anything about Black people that is created by Black people. When I first started there almost no Black owned websites dedicated to Black books. Over the years new years were coming on-line all the time. But many of those sites have disappeared and fewer new sites are being created. While the number of websites over all is exploding year after year; the number of Black book websites continue to go down. Have you noticed this trend too? My concern is while …

The Cooking Gene by Culinary Historian Michael W. Twitty is The 2018 James Beard Award (non-cookbook) winner. As much as I can't stand awards I have to give them a second look now because without hearing that Twitty won the award I would not have heard of this book - which I now absolutely must have on my bookshelf. I love to cook but I especially love to cook the foods that are indigenous to my family. Anyway, I found this interview from Mr. Twitty and African Ancestry's co-founder Dr. Gina Paige and it too is delightful!!!

Amazon started by getting indie authors to give them exclusive rights to sell their books, but now major publishers are doing the same thing?! I recently added 1,500 audiobooks to AALBC that you can listen to on any platform -- not just a Kindle. Here you may find the newest audiobooks. However, Trevor Noah's audiobook, Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood is only available from Amazon. If is a short sited strategy to give Amazon exclusive rights to sell a book. Let's see how that work for them. I already know consumers are increasingly dissatisfied with Amazon. But then again major publishers have never been known t…

I received my BA degree in Psychology in 2001 and in 2003 I was diagnosed with the most debilitating mental illness known to man, schizophrenia. I have been hospitalized 10 or more times. I didn't let this stop me. I learned everything I could about schizophrenia and mood swings. I learned how not to act. How to work with people. I began giving mental health workshops in my community and I was awarded as a Baynews9 every day hero seen by two million. I wrote my books, " Don't call me crazy! I'm just in love," as a fiction inspired by my true story. I write this to tell you that any dream is possible. You can become a successful author it's all about learning who your targ…

Howard Zinn Howard Zinn has been fighting for progressive causes since the 1930s, when he began organizing workers in the New York City shipyards. He later embarked on an enduring career teaching political science first at Spelman College and then at Boston University. Over the years, the celebrated firebrand wrote numerous eye-opening books advocating economic and social justice, perhaps most significantly, A People's History of the United States, an incendiary work which turns many of the prevailing myths about America on their heads. Presented from the perspectives of assorted minorities and women, it, for example, portrays leaders of slave and Indian revolts li…

The heat that rose from her skin had spun a vibrant warmth up and over him, and as he’d rested his head along the round of her breasts, he’d wanted only to snuggle deep beneath the essence of her, and melt the chill from his soul. Hello. I am pending publication of a memoir, White Man's Disease. White Man’s Disease is not overtly about race (although a publisher/mentor told me a memoir written by a Black man in America is inevitably about race.) Nor is White Man’s Disease literally about a disease--it's metaphorical--medical calamity provides a subtext. I have a blog with excerpts here: http://whitemansdisease.weebly.com/ The photo is a placeholder for the book cover art. Thank you.

I know we are only 17 years into the 21 century, but since people love lists I figured I’d create a 21st century version of the our list from the last century, “The AALBC’s Favorite 50 African American Authors of the 20th Century.” (I know; it is an ugly page, but it is on the list of pages to migrate to the new format) Renaming the list to the “Top” or the “Best” 50 Black Authors of the 21st Century, is more in line with the “click-baity,” attention grabbing headlines that are required now to attract attention. I wonder if people could come up with 50 favorite authors, When I created the original list 15 years ago, almost 1,900 people to cast votes. I'm act…

Hello. My name is Felicia Brookins. I am the author of the new Christian Fiction literary piece, Sister Nadeen's WAYS, which to many of my current readers seems to be more of a Christian Reality. I would like to have you review my first Christian Fiction novel which debuted April 2017. The book focuses mostly on Nadeen Simmons, a main character that is blinded to the fact that she is a victim of the very generational curse she is blindly passing along to her three daughters. The book has several platforms such as domestic abuse of a male, child abuse, teenage suicidal attempts, a spirit of religion and the passing down of generational curses, that cause the main character…

This is not "new" news, because Amazon has providing a platform for, and profiting off, the sale of counterfeited books (indeed a variety of products) for years. It is good see this covered. In major news paper. The New York Times reports the on a publisher who purchased 34 of their own books on Amazon and found that 30 were counterfeit. Outstanding Black Women of Yalobusha County and their stories and their contributions to a Mississippi Community was published in December16,2020 (ISBN 9798581596999). The black women featured in this book made a way out of no way--and not just any old way, - but a good way. They got in good trouble long before the late Congressman John Lewis coined the phrase - strong, black and southern and no doubt just like his mother. They wanted more for their children than they would live to see or obtain. Just imagine how much better our society might be now had these women been given the rights and privileges of white Americans. These Black women were left behind, but they refu…

Hello all, A follower on Twitter contacted me and suggested I post a topic on the AALBC regarding my new book series "A War Below". So, here I am. And thank you all for taking the time to read this post. A War Below is a series of four books that follow Moses Jones on his journey from slave to underground resistance fighter during the American Civil War. The series is a dark and gritty account of life in the Underground Railroad and reveals how the United States government utilized (some say hijacked) the Underground Railroad to run clandestine espionage missions into the South during the war. The series tells of revenge, murder, sabotage and assassinations - al…

I have a question for writers............ I've heard many times from artists whether they are musicians, painters, or writers, that the best among them have been known to get much of their inspiration from some mysterious place "other than themselves". They are said to get them from some sort of unknown spiritual or cosmic realm that flashes ideas in their minds through dreams, visions, and other modes. How much is this the case from your personal experiences and from observing other artists that you know? Does much of your work come in a "flash" of inspiration from some unknown spiritual place?
