January 2020 marked the 10th year of this version of the AALBC discussion forums. in January 2010 I had to make two substantial changes to the discussion forums; I had to implement different software. The software I was previously using (Discus) made it impossible for me to deal with the spam posts the site was getting. Spammers could programmatically hit the site with 100 posts and I'd have to find each one manually, and delete them one by one. Good morning readers and writers, I have a terrible bellyache this morning. I had one of my books reviewed by Kirkus, and received my review today. The problem was not that I received a bad review, the reviewer stated it was, "A richly textured, affecting tale of a family’s resilience in the face of injustice." My issue is that she referred to a historical fiction book about slavery and the aftermath in one family as a soap opera. In my mind, the black experience is not a Life Time movie and can never be described as a "soap opera." I don't have the words to express my feelings, insulted doesn't quite hit it. I learned from a local journalist and author Cheryl Wills, of New York City's NY1 that Rosa Guy passed recently. I don't know the exact date, but I believe it was within the past week. Rosa was a Harlem based author, and literary activist. Her first book was published in the mid 60's (I believe), she co-founded the Harlem Writer's Guild. She was also a member of a Black nationalist literary organization, On Guard for Freedom. She is definitely, as I would say, "An Author You Should Know".
