We recently lost the bookstore Azizi Books, in Matteson, Il and their website BlackBooksDirect.com. Like so many other stores and websites there was no fanfare, no gnashing of teeth, just the loss of another platform dedicated to promoting our books. As the number of platforms available to showcase our work continues to dwindle, the opportunities available to authors to reach readers becomes more difficult. This creates an environment that fosters a competitive spirit which does not serve us, or our readers, very well. I will share short recommendations to authors and publishers here. Even the most conscious authors may want to improve the situation, but si…

This is an old story (originally broadcast on NPR back in 2010) of a book that went on to enjoy both critical and popular acclaim. The book was also turned into an academy award nominated film (I don't recall if it won anything). The publisher sent 6,000 galleys to help generate that word of mouth; can you image--6,000 copies! I know this is a story about word-of-mouth promotion of books, but it would also really be interesting to know how much was spent on advertising, who those ad buys were with, and how those ads performed. Excerpt: Room by Emma Donoghue When she spits the second time it's my go with Toothbrush, I scrub each my teeth all the way …

Should writers be paid to write? The question does not come out of thin air. It is born out of the fact that there is pressure from businesses to pay writers increasingly less for their work and it is getting harder for a free lance writer to make a full time living writing. As a result, it is harder for all the intermediaries between the reader and the writer; editors, reviewers, booksellers (on and off line), publishers, publicists, distributors, etc, to make money. This starts a process which feeds in on itself. As the writing profession becomes more challenging it discourages talented new writers from entering the profession, which reduces quality, which in tur…

Hello All, If you have read my review of Sleep Don't Come Easy, you'll notice that I wondered where all of the AA detectives have gone. I started looking around and really, where are they? I would have thought with all of the shoot 'em books that the publishers swear we, the AA reading audience, can't seem to do without; I would have thought that there would have been a couple of detective supermen to go along with that. Are mysteries to hard to write, to hard to read, what is going on?

I had started a new trend of reading books that are the basis of many of our classic movies. Naturally, I thought of my Ol’ Grayhead because I know he loves movies as much as I do. I began this kick after reading Nina Revyor’s marvelous novel, The Age of Dreaming. The Age of Dreaming is a novel that tells the life story of a Japanese actor who eventually became a Hollywood movie idol during Hollywood’s silent screen era. The book is Revyor’s masterpiece. I had reviewed Revyor’s previ…
