@aalbcIn case you did not check out this book when it first came out. Sleep Don't Come Easy Click to order via Amazonby Victor McGlothin & J.D. Mason Read an AALBC.com Book Review I came across Sleep Don’t Come Easy by J.D. Mason and Victor McGlothin some time ago. I threw it in my “to read” pile when I spotted J.D. Mason’s name on the front cover. I have been a huge fan of Mason since I read one of her early novels, And on the Eighth Day She Rested. I have been hooked on Mason from that day on. Now that I am back into the swing of reading and reviewing, I reached into my mountainous “to read” stack and pulled out the short story antholog…

15 years later, has the Million Man March had any impact on Black people? Will the Obama presidency? Is it naïve to think that these landmark events should? I found this discussion interesting because one of the most senior Black people in publishing, Erroll McDonald, participated. Check out a video of the conversation the the day after the Million Man March http://runt.it/millmanmarch

We recently lost the bookstore Azizi Books, in Matteson, Il and their website BlackBooksDirect.com. Like so many other stores and websites there was no fanfare, no gnashing of teeth, just the loss of another platform dedicated to promoting our books. As the number of platforms available to showcase our work continues to dwindle, the opportunities available to authors to reach readers becomes more difficult. This creates an environment that fosters a competitive spirit which does not serve us, or our readers, very well. I will share short recommendations to authors and publishers here. Even the most conscious authors may want to improve the situation, but si…

This is an old story (originally broadcast on NPR back in 2010) of a book that went on to enjoy both critical and popular acclaim. The book was also turned into an academy award nominated film (I don't recall if it won anything). The publisher sent 6,000 galleys to help generate that word of mouth; can you image--6,000 copies! I know this is a story about word-of-mouth promotion of books, but it would also really be interesting to know how much was spent on advertising, who those ad buys were with, and how those ads performed. Excerpt: Room by Emma Donoghue When she spits the second time it's my go with Toothbrush, I scrub each my teeth all the way …

Should writers be paid to write? The question does not come out of thin air. It is born out of the fact that there is pressure from businesses to pay writers increasingly less for their work and it is getting harder for a free lance writer to make a full time living writing. As a result, it is harder for all the intermediaries between the reader and the writer; editors, reviewers, booksellers (on and off line), publishers, publicists, distributors, etc, to make money. This starts a process which feeds in on itself. As the writing profession becomes more challenging it discourages talented new writers from entering the profession, which reduces quality, which in tur…

Hello All, If you have read my review of Sleep Don't Come Easy, you'll notice that I wondered where all of the AA detectives have gone. I started looking around and really, where are they? I would have thought with all of the shoot 'em books that the publishers swear we, the AA reading audience, can't seem to do without; I would have thought that there would have been a couple of detective supermen to go along with that. Are mysteries to hard to write, to hard to read, what is going on?

Hello All, Since there don’t seem to be a lot of books coming across my desk, no less books that I want to read. So, this past summer I have been all over the map with my reading. I had started a new trend of reading books that are the basis of many of our classic movies. Naturally, I thought of my Ol’ Grayhead because I know he loves movies as much as I do. I began this kick after reading Nina Revyor’s marvelous novel, The Age of Dreaming. The Age of Dreaming is a novel that tells the life story of a Japanese actor who eventually became a Hollywood movie idol during Hollywood’s silent screen era. The book is Revyor’s masterpiece. I had reviewed Revyor’s previ…

Man..I'm exhausted with all the '-----' going on in the world. Time to lighten the mood, lift some spirits, remissness, LOL! I want you to spit your drink out from laughing, fall off your chair, slobber out of control... cause you know how we do! You Can't make this stuff UP!! When you sit back and recall the funny things that come out of a child’s mouth, you can’t help but laugh. The innocence is priceless as you sit back and watch them try to figure out how to navigate the world. What I find even funnier is listening to them as they near adulthood – the conversations that take place as they now try to figure out how to navigate the world tha…

Dear Reviewer, I hope this email finds you well and in good spirits. My name is Waad and I represent Anthony Huger; Author, Entrepreneur, and a proud leader for change in his community. The world can be cruel to Black Men, and beyond that first breath of good clean air, it seems as if the entire universe conspires to bring them down. Anthony has a story that will resonate with many- minorities, the marginalized, and the forgotten. New York gang life may be used as fodder for TV and movies, but surviving the realities of that life, and thriving in an environment specifically designed to tear apart your humanity, is not only be…
