It finally occurred to me that when it comes to the subject of whether or not writers should get paid for their work, I can speak with some degree of relevancy because of what I voluntarily did for free on the Cynique’s Corner site. After an ebook project I signed on with crashed and burned due to problems with implementation, I approached Troy about doing my own version of its concept. He graciously consented, and since he was doing me a favor by allowing me to serialize my book on a chapter-a-week basis, it never occurred to me to expect payment for this. I just thought it would be fun. And it was. I had no idea what the response would be to this update…

Hey everyone! I was curious if any of the members here who write black speculative fiction were planning on attending "Blerdcon 2019" in Arlington VA. With the estimated attendance being 3-4k I wondered if anyone would be interested in doing a group reading at a local independent bookstore. I understand we're low on time with it being a month out, I unfortunately have only become aware of it but thought I'd give it a shot since it's rare Black Speculative Fiction authors are in the same place around so many fans of the genre. Feel free to reach out to me on this topic thread, I'll be checking it throughout the week. Best, …

The quest for freedom and equality has been a much broader and longer journey than most people realize, given it is still not achieved after 495 years! Divine Consciousness: From a Dystopian Diaspora to Afrofuturism, takes readers on a journey, from a point in time when the African Diaspora was just beginning, to a time yet to be determined—the future. For 340 years, Black people were the “Slave-Industrial Complex.” We were subjected to absolute and unspeakable horror, brutality, and oppression with no abatement and for the next 155 years, subjugated by the Black Codes, Jim Crow laws, lynchings, voter disenfranchisement, oppression, police …

Hi I'm new to AALBC and just wanted to introduce myself and say hi. I'm an author, pen name Christina OW, of interracial and muticultural romance books. I just love mixed race love, there just something beautiful about it. And I love books with intense emotions, those who've read my books know that about me. And as a reader... if you can make me cry, love or just really hate characters not because of bad writing, you have a fan for life! I'm an Aquarius, loyal as a well fed and sheltered dog, to a fault. I'm a twin, I love telling people that. I also love telling them that I'm the good twin and she's the evil one. But she's not, she's just blunt and no …

Hello All, I was watching my girl Rachel Maddow the other night. This night happened to be after that fool Pat Robertson said that the Haitian people asked for that earthquake because their ancestors had made a deal with the devil in order to get the France's foot off their necks to become free from slavery. He's ignorant as all hell. The Haitian Ambassador was a guest of Rachel Maddow and he dropped some knowledge that I did not know: that if it was not for the Haitian people freeing themselves from the French, the French would not have sold the US the Louisiana Purchase. Many of you know that the Louisiana Purchase basically doubled, more than doubled, the Unit…

As part of my ongoing website upgrade I stumbled across an interview I did on the Talking Books Radio program from back in 2001. The radio show no longer broadcasts indeed it problem stopped broadcasting over 15 years ago. During this time there were many more programs of this type. It there are any running now. II'm simply not aware of them. If you know of any radio programs dedicated to Black books please reply with information about them During the program I cautioned listeners that, “We, as a people, need to get beyond the point where we are just taking information off the internet. We need to contribute more…” https://aalbc.com/authors/home…

From a librarian's page "I’m starting my first book order of the year, and am looking to add more books with diverse characters. I’m having trouble finding many without major trauma or big problems-I’d like to have some diverse books that show the main character doing ordinary things-maybe some friend drama they have to work through or something. Anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions of good books you’ve found? My school has a high population of Karen/Burmese and African American families, if that helps." I have the same problem - there are plenty of picture books from that long time favorite Corduroy to last year's Jubari Jumps. But fewer books for middle eleme…

For better or worse I am a Walter Mosley fan. I've supported all of his novels. As of late I'm kind of wondering If he's really trying to say something? Or are his recent novels Diablerie Killing Johnny Fry his attempt at jumping on the trash novel bandwagon without being too transparent. Beyond the racial dynamics, the sex that is more graphic than required and it puts me in the mind of a wierd Zane novel.

This is one I definitely want to read. The title refers to the place black slaves believed the dead went to find peace. Haitian slaveowners deliberately worked their slaves to death because it was cheaper to replace them than to give them enough rest and food to survive. Allende says Haitian slave women would kill the children they bore -- sending them to the "island beneath the sea" -- to spare them the agonies their parents were experiencing. NPR: Allende talks about why she chose to write about slavery in Haiti.

NABI (the curator) is Seated (the lightskinned guy). My boyfriend Posr is standing. Out to dinner with Posr at Native in New York. I swear, the food there is SO good. It's my favorite restaurant now, but the lighting is AWFUL. I pitched a bitch about the lighting and no one turned up the lights. They said it's supposed to be like you're in a cave atmosphere. Then after Posr paid, they turned on the lights! Anyway, the FOOD is outrageously good. Make sure you …

This was the decision that Reuters reported on last November. "Google made unauthorized digital editions of nearly all of the world's valuable copyright-protected literature and profits from displaying those works," Aiken said. "Such mass digitization and exploitation far exceeds the bounds of the fair use defense." --Paul Aiken Those with the biggest and baddest computers make all the money. The content provider gets nothing. It seems to me that Google would be willing to share some of the money they make with the people who created the stuff they are selling. Google would have no "value" to provide otherwise.
