The New York Times has identified 100 books from all the books they have reviewed over the past year to be the most "notable." Of that list 11 were books were written by Black* writers. Boy, if we depended solely upon The New York Times to identify notable books written by Black folks we'd be in for a world of disappointment. Thankfully we have other options to discover books written by Black people. Single women are ofter targeted and criticized when they make somewhat questionable choices in order to survive and often care for children without the help of the fathers. One term often thrown around when a woman seems to be wedged into a bad situation originated out of popular culture and it is the word Ratchet. I read this quote in an article I just finished reading, Black-Owned Bookstores: Anchors of the Black Power Movement, by Joshua Clark Davis (January 28, 2017). Hello. I am on the Board of Directors for Open Books Prison Book Project in Pensacola, FL. We are 100 percent staffed by volunteers and have been sending books to prisoners throughout the state of Florida for 20 years. We receive about 100 letters a month and send out as many packages. The inmate writes to us requesting general topics or authors and we do our best to send what they request. All the books we have are donated, so our selection varies. As you may know, people of color make up a large percentage of the prison population in Florida as well as the country at large.
