  1. The New York Times has identified 100 books from all the books they have reviewed over the past year to be the most "notable." Of that list 11 were books were written by Black* writers. Boy, if we depended solely upon The New York Times to identify notable books written by Black folks we'd be in for a world of disappointment. Thankfully we have other options to discover books written by Black people. The number of these options have greatly diminished over the years, which is why Ill be working with come folks promoting an effort called the 2018 Blackout #readingblackout I just learned about #readingblackout this effort today. 7. Netflix is going to be streaming a film version of Nella Larson's novella Passing(1930). The story is set in New York City circa late 20s/early 30s. It tells the fictional story of two very light skinned friends Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry. Irene stays within the black community and marries a black man. Clare passes for white and marries a racist white man. Much of the novel focuses on Clare attempting to conceal her identity from husband. For those who have not read the book or looked at the Netflix film, I don't want to be a spoiler and give away to much of plot. But like many trag…

  17. This was the decision that Reuters reported on last November. "Google made unauthorized digital editions of nearly all of the world's valuable copyright-protected literature and profits from displaying those works," Aiken said. "Such mass digitization and exploitation far exceeds the bounds of the fair use defense." --Paul Aiken Those with the biggest and baddest computers make all the money. The content provider gets nothing. It seems to me that Google would be willing to share some of the money they make with the people who created the stuff they are selling. Google would have no "value" to provide otherwise.

My new book Ratchet Woman takes a new angle on a form of women bashing that is widespread today. Single women are ofter targeted and criticized when they make somewhat questionable choices in order to survive and often care for children without the help of the fathers. One term often thrown around when a woman seems to be wedged into a bad situation originated out of popular culture and it is the word Ratchet. Ratchet cover a wide range of behaviors and situations, but often those using it had a hand in placing their targets in those life situations to begin with. http://www.prlog.org/12133532-ratchet-woman-released-by-book-express.html

While tracking a herd of buffalo, he noticed a cackle of hyenas stealthily following the herd. In Kwampa’s vast experience as a hunter, he knew the presence of the hyenas meant a much bigger predator was also probably stalking the herd, whose catch the hyenas intended to hijack. Or that the hyenas had gone long enough without successfully stealing any food, enough to push them to hunt. Whatever the case was, the good hunter knew to respect the bala…

  29. I read this quote in an article I just finished reading, Black-Owned Bookstores: Anchors of the Black Power Movement, by Joshua Clark Davis (January 28, 2017). This quote, and others like it in the article, struck me because the sentiment expressed is the ONLY way these stores were created and endured. If I, for example, were only concerned about making money, I would have wrapped up AALBC.com a long time ago. The tough part about all of this is that we operate in a climate where increasing one's level of consciousness. Is very low on the list of things to do. Success is measured by how much money you amass, how you amass it is largely irrelevant. Exhibit #1: Pres…

My perception of Mr. Sanders may well be different from others due to my prior knowledge of the man. The Bernie that you will read about comes solely from my limited research and overactive imagination of what he might be like in the mornings. The homework assignment was to pick one person from a list of people that intrigued me. I was tasked with writing a scene showing this person getting up in the morning and getting ready to go out. I had to imagine my person getting out of bed, asking myself whe…
