  2. Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library - Inside cover and first page of Austin Reed's manuscript. Years ago, a rare-books dealer browsing at an estate sale in Rochester came across an unusual manuscript, dated 1858. The family selling it said little about where it had been for the last 150 years. It appeared never to have left upstate New York. Scholars now believe that the mystery manuscript is the first recovered memoir written in prison by an African-American, a discovery that Yale University says it made after authenticating the document and acquiring it for its Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. The 304-page memoir, titled “The Life and Advent…

Is Amazon the Reader's Friend Video In late 2014, Amazon and the publishing house Hachette settled a months-long dispute over who should set the price for e-books. In Amazon's view, lower prices mean more sales and more readers, and that benefits everyone. But for publishers, the price of an e-book must reflect the investment made, from the author's advance to a book's production. The conflict, resolved for now, has only raised more questions about the value of books, Amazon's business practices, and the role of publishers. Is book publishing an oligopoly, a dinosaur in need of disruption? Is Amazon, which accounts for 41% of all new book and 67% of all e-…

  4. According to Toni Morrison it is Ta-Nehisi Coates. His latest book, Between the World and Me, was supposed to come out in September, but has been pushed up to July 17th. It is unusual for a publisher to move a in this fashion but given the demand for the book decided this was the right move. According to the Wall Street Journal, "To build support for the book, Spiegel & Grau in May sent advance-reader copies to a small group of influential people interested in the subject, including Mr. Legend and Mr. Remnick, editor of the New Yorker, Mr. Jackson said." AALBC.com I was not on that short list. Mr. Jackson is a Black man. As far as I know he is the most senior Brot…

Black Demagogues and Pseudo-Scholars By Henry Louis Gates Jr. July 20, 1992, Section A, Page 15 (This is a digitized version of an article from The Times’s print archive, before the start of online publication in 1996.) During the past decade, the historic relationship between African Americans and Jewish Americans -- a relationship that sponsored so many of the concrete advances of the civil rights era -- showed another and less attractive face. While anti-Semitism is generally on the wane in this country, it has been on the rise among black Americans. A recent survey finds not only that blacks are twice as likely as whites to hold anti-…

In a world where people, business, and other entities are increasingly using a Facebook page as their primary web presence, or if they are tech savvy using WordPress or some other blogging platform to establish their primary web presence, I still opt for going the old fashioned way--doing it myself. The original Power List site http://powerlist.info was created, quickly using WordPress, but Wordpress' limitations became obvious immediately. It took me another 18 months to get around to redesigning the Power List site, but in the interim I've learned a bit more about web designed (I actually teach a college level course on the subject), so I decided last month …

Dear Friends, I would greatly appreciate your consideration to review my novel, a family tree, Taking Root, which was inspired by an actual event (below) and is available at www.daviddoc.com/books . One morning, back in the 90s, I was watching the local news in Los Angeles and heard a story about a woman, gunned down as she walked from her front door to her car to go to work. The police report stated that gang members targeted her for an initiation challenge. The suspect took her purse and, I assumed, left some people without a mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, or friend. I don't know why, but this senseless act stayed with me for a lon…

Today, while still young, may ultimately evolve into a moment long remembered by all of us for some time to come. This Election has been huge, but later the dust will settle and you will check off the things you would like to see occur in exchange for your vote. Nothing will change in some places, and in others, there may be change for us as a collective, but while we are trying to peep what others can will or might do for us, we must look to see what we can do for ourselves. We, I am sure, can all find things for which we would enjoy planting our flag, but I know that if we don't take immediate steps to preserve our literary heritage, then we will find ourselves written…

South Carolina Republican lawmakers moved over 140,000 residents from the 1st Congressional District into the 6th Congressional District. The NAACP argues the Legislature moved over 30,000 of those residents because they were Black, violating the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Folks need to grasp the idea that the Constitution guaranteeing the right to vote doesn’t apply to us. We are fighting the same battle to vote as my father, his father, and his father. Jesse Helms said, “Anyone can vote if they are qualified.”…

This is about how a man can stalk a seventeen year old teenager without any cloak of official authority because he felt he was up to no good and after an altercation the man shoots and kills the teenager and is later set free by a jury. This is about how it felt to hear a not guilty verdict of second degree murder and see George Zimmerman go free while Trayvon Martin is dead because he fought with a strange man that was following him for no apparent reason. This is about a feeling that starts in the pit of my stomach and comes from a time …

Here are the most popular book categories on the AALBC website. If you follow the links you will be sent to a page where the book in each category is listed. The first list has over 800 books in it. There are currently 288 books in the “Poetry / American / General” category. I found this personally interesting that this category of books is in the top 10, because poetry does not sell as well as it did which I launched the site over 20 years ago. Despite that it is obvious my focus on the genre has not wavered. A website can afford to do this, a physical bookstore can not because it is much wiser to dedicate floor space to products that are moving 🙂 …
