I admit, I am not a fan of slasher films; their stories extremely rarely , I will not say never, hold up for me; and their stories are not meant to. The goal of a slasher film is to get the audience to jump scare as much as possible, and that is fine. Ma from 2019 is a slasher film. It is meant to get you to jump scare. But the best part of the movie is the tiniest bit, and I have thought about it coinciding with my thoughts on fantasy films en large and how they rarely involve the historic usa. The best comparison to visualize my point is taking the flashback scenes in MA 2019 and the character of Rose Rita, played by vanessa anne williams, in A House With a Cl…

I am new to this platform. I read many of the posts and wanted to introduce my first book, the series Ganey Teaches. Ganey Teaches Counting by Dr. Lorna Randle Ganey and her great-granddaughters are at home studying. She notices the girls are writing numbers and counting them on the board. As a Christian educator, Ganey enjoys teaching her granddaughters to understand the world around them. She takes them to the zoo to enhance their learning, ensuring they practice counting and understand the concept of totals. Seeing my mother and nieces come to life in this book was fun. Genre: CHILDREN'S FICTION SubGenre: Concepts / Counting & Numbers Age…

I hung in there and finally finished reading “The Help”. Whew! This is a 451-page novel which revolves around a way of life that harks back to ante-bellum times, and it was written by a latter-day southern belle named Kathryn Sockett. The book begins back in 1963 down in the deep south, and is set against the historic back drop of the festering civil rights movement. Its story line relies heavily on the observations of 2 housekeepers who have consented to help a young white woman achieve her goal of recording the experiences of 12 black servants for the purpose of cobbling their recollections into a book. What is most compelling about this excursion into Miss…

So, what are you buying and what do you want? I got Walter Mosley's The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey for my son. I'm not sure it's really his type but it's become a tradition for me to give him a Mosley book and the new McGill won't be out till March. For me I got Wizard of the Crow by Ngugi Wa'Thiong'O. It's been on my wish list for quite a while and I'm looking forward to it. Also got A Company of Moors by Justin Thomas - North Africa in 1640. Both of these are BABs 766 and 571 pages respectively, you know I like that. I think it's been a couple of years since I posted my famous Rum Ball recipe for the holidays. Enjoy: RUM BALLS 3 c Crushed van…

GLOBALIZATION: GHETTOHEAT® Q & A WITH KRISTINA GRAAFF & HICKSON: CEO OF GHETTOHEAT® & GHETTOHEAT® TV, JULY 2010 KRISTINA GRAAFF: What were the reasons for naming your company GHETTOHEAT®? HICKSON: I named my independent company GHETTOHEAT® for identification purposes. It was important for myself to be recognized by readers, writers and everyday people from the inner-city streets as a publishing house that created great quality works, material they could relate to, by one of their own—a Black man from their urban world. There’s always been a negative connotation of the word “ghetto”, yet I’ve put a spin on it, showing everyone that greatn…

I look forward to the various discussions on writing and how to land an agent. I also want to learn to perfect my craft before releasing my debut children's picture book and novel. I don't want to be put in the genre of urban fiction/street --a niche market. My books are more than that. A WRITER'S NIGHTMARE by, Tiffany Simone I know that feeling, FEAR. It often holds me back. The writers block, the numerous rewrites, the right word, the various opinions, the what to and not to write. Then comes the self-doubt. What if? What if they don't like my pitch, my query letter, my synopsis, my title, my opening paragraph, my sample chapters, …

Normally I archive my newsletters on my blog. But WordPress has updated their editor, making it harder to copy and paste information from other sources. I guess they are trying to make their software easier to use. I discovered the change to their editor while helping a client create a blog and I struggled to use the software and editor, for the first time since it was invented! I guess they call that progress. At any rate, I make the AALBC newsletter available on the website to allow people who don't subscribe to the newsletter to discover and read it. Ultimately I have to move my Blog from WordPress' database to my own to make the archival process more …

The Butterfly is the first black female superhero in usa comics. I can't verify it explicitly, the usa comic world is large. She came out in august 1971, so she is older than Nubia of wonder woman (1973) or Monica Rambeau of captain marvel (1982) or Bumblebee of teen titans(1976) Storm of the Xmen (1975). But if any of you know an older black female superhero. I do know some black artist made comic books in the 1960s 1950s but I don't know them well enough. A fellow Black artist made a still of her in his own way. https://www.deviantart.com/breezykiid94/art/Butterfly-suit1-Vs-Midwife0-1057089142 referral https://pdsh.fandom.com/wiki/Butterfly Do you …

Thanks to Bernice McFadden coining the term "seg-book-gation" last year .....and challenging the industry to stop their practice of placing books by Black Authors in one segregated area.....I have become one of the first authors that Barnes & Noble stocks in "GENERAL FICTION." In a way, I'm very nervous about it. I think not being in the Black Section might hurt book sales. But on the other hand I'm delighted that "The Sexy Part of the Bible" was chosen for Barnes & Noble's new experiment, based on strong reviews of the novel. Publishing is changing immensely right now and black authors are truly suffering and losing leverage for the…

The Secret Lives of the Four Wives: A Novel by Lola Shoneyin Read an Excerpt This is an excellent book from what I hear. The banner above is was provided to me by the publisher, who are advertising in the next newsletter. These ads beyond, bringing revenue, actually bring value to the website as the books are all excellent and the creatives are attractive too. One of the problems with AALBC.com homepage, a problem I intent to address ins January, is that it is too busy. One of the reasons for this is that I've allowed advertising to drive what is one the page and that has made it too overwhelming for new visitors to under…

Hello All, I'm going to start doing my own thang on MLK Day. I'm going to read a non fiction book every January. One, I'm going to read something, anything, because so many white folks in the past did their level best to make sure that one of the things we, as black folks, were lacking was an education. With the laws on the books about us not being taught to read and write, then when slavery ended, our education system was still lacking in many parts of the country, for decades after slavery; it's the one thing I know I can do because so many did not want me to be able to read. I'm going with non fiction because, you all know I lean towards fiction, so I'm -- wat…

I've begin, in earnest, the migration of AALBC.com's old content to the new format; in the process I'm rediscovering content that I really enjoyed. You know this is a really cool site, if I do say so myself At any rate, I think you'll enjoy this video. Daniel Black is reminiscent of J. California Cooper, was was also a brilliant story teller. Both writers resonate with me because they tell stories about Black people in rural southern environments. The kind of individuals who most African Americans come from. Enjoy.

About five years ago at a funeral, the Lost Tribe of Levi was mentioned during the service. I googled it a few weeks later and learned about the Lemba Tribe in Kenya and Zimbabwe. This tribe has the priestly DNA of the Levites, the tribe designated by God to be the protectors of his word. I had always heard about black Hebrews all around the world, so I thought it might be interesting to write a book about how that migration might have taken place. The legacy would end in the United States with a black woman. When I started the book I had no idea that this was a story over 3000 years. In order to finish it in my lifetime, I spaced it out every 14 generations. I was amazed…

YouTube really knows how to incite me... I may need to take a break from YouTube or figure out a way to put on blinders when I'm uploading my videos. At any rate, the woman @Pioneer1 lusts after has a new book out. Below is a video in which she discusses ideas from the book. One is the statement that Black living in American today are the luckiest ones to have ever lived. Besides the statement being absurd on it's face. The implication (correct me if I'm wrong) is that we should, on some level be grateful that our ancestors we enslaved. When Candice gets in front of white people and say shit like this I just want to stomp her into the ground. @P…

About to start reading Percival Everett's "I Am Not Sidney Poitier." I've been looking forward to this one for a while. Has anyone heard anything more about the movie adaptation of "Erasure"? I know Angela Bassett and Courtney Vance were involved and hoped that it would move forward quickly in light of the success of "Precious." (Many think that "Push" was the inspiration for Everett's character's foray into "ghetto lit.")

The Twelfth National Black Writers Conference I know I'm preaching to the choir when I say this is one of this nation's premier events. They have hosted two of the three of the Black Nobel Laureates. Wole Soyinka of Nigeria, the first black person to win the Nobel Prize for Literature (1986) Derek Walcott of Saint Lucia won the Nobel in 1992 and will be honored and will attend the 2014 conference and participate in several events.
