  1. Once a month I publish an eNewsletter which is emailed to about 16,000 subscribers. At one point, the number of subscribers was over 17,000 but over the last year or so I have lost more subscribers than I have gained. The biggest cause of the decrease is simply email addresses that have become invalid. The system that I use Madmimi will delete any email addresses where there was a "hard bounce". This is actually a good feature, as it help keep costs by purging bad email addresses. Madmimi charges you based upon the number of email addresses in your mailing list. In every newsletter I solicit and receive feedback. There are some issues which are raised often e…

AALBC mourns the passing of J. California Cooper: EBONY.com reports that she transitioned in Seattle, Washington, on September 20th 2014 Cooper was a great story teller. The last time I saw her was in 2009 this photo was taken a maybe a year or two earlier at the National Book Club Conference. I shot this video of her where she described a new book she was working on. As far as I know the book was never published, but this was also around the time when Black authors were beginning to see a reduction on book deals. Here is the video Strange. The only indication that I can find on the net is a small mention in Ebony Magazine--not a single…

I'm still collecting votes for your Favorite Black Authors of the 21st Century (I'll update the list with the most recent entries shortly). I have to eliminate a lot of authors because one of the rules is that the authors had to have been alive and published a book in the 21st century. Jimmy Baldwin would be at the top of the list give the number of votes he has received. Baldwin was #8 on the 20th Century List. Some submitted Fran Ross who passed in 1985. CeCe and Roxy Books is an independent board book series written by former educator, wife and mother, Pascha Adamo, with the intention to help bridge the gap in the disparity between people of color as main characters in children's books. Adamo began writing the series after receiving numerous books for her first born's baby shower and realizing that the underrepresentation of people of color was statistically indicative of the current trends. Adamo wanted characters and books for her biracial child (now 5) to see and connect with. She also wanted to go beyond the literature norm of historical and cultural stereotypical content and feature a biracial character having every…

Interestingly the recently announced merger of Random House and Penguin Publishers, forming the largest publishing company the world has ever seen fail to generate any conversation on my regular online haunts. I could be the presidential elections was more than Black folks could think about for the last few weeks. From the October 5, 2013, New York edition of the New York Times By Samuel G Freedman In reaction to a presentation by author Kimberla Lawson Roby on during the Decatur Book Festival: “I am a fan of reality as opposed to hypocritism, if that’s the word,” he said. “The books, though they’re fiction, have a lot of truth in them. In Black Hollywood Unchained, Ishmael Reed gathers an impressive group of scholars, critics, intellectuals, and artist to examine and respond to the contemporary portrayals of Blacks in films. Using the 2012 release of the film Django Unchained as the focal point of much of the discussion, these essays and reviews provide a critical perspective on the challenges facing filmmakers and actors when confronted with issues on race and the historical portrayal of African American characters. Reed also addresses the black community’s perceptiveness as discerning and responsible consumers of film, theatre, art, and music. Twenty-eight contributors including this book’s editor, Is…

According to a news report in The Guardian, James Franco is reported to have signed on to direct a "potentially controversial true-life drama based on a wild and unsavoury stripper road trip to Florida that went viral on Twitter." The viral twitter story is here but the one Franco is said to direct is based on the Rollingstone interview with Aziah "Zola" Wells. During an event featuring award winning author Ben Okri, he desribed a review he written about a book: He said he, in essence that he'd panned the book. The review was published and he felt the review was fair though he did not like the book. Ten years later he re-read the book, and he thought it was great. He was at a different place and was now able to appreciate the book. He really regretted writing that unfavorable book review. I wondered if anyone had written a favorable review of a book; only to realize over time that the book actually sucked. After the event; I spoke with someone who regularly writes reviews for major publications including the Washi…

In 1990, Bettye became the eighth-generation griotte for her family. Their credo—“Always remember—you’re a Madison. You come from African slaves and a president”—was intended to be a source of pride, but for her, it echoed with abuses of slavery, including rape and incest. While most of my friends in Cleveland were running to the store for older guys in the projects, or holding their drugs and guns, I was out stealing and hustling to make ends meet. On several occasions, grown dudes had approached me in my hood with propositions or intimidation tactics, but every time I’d declined, assuring them that I WAS MY OWN MAN! It cost me a few war wounds, but I’d also earned my respect! At age twelve, I’d made a name for myself and influenced my peers to stand on their own. They’d stopped making the constant store runs…
