  7. What’s interesting to me about this review is that he/she claims to have read “quite a few books on the Civil War” and never read that slaves had it bad. How is that possible?? Think about that for a moment. “If Cotton Could Talk” is not about slavery but a story about relationships created by strangers who meet on a Mississippi plantation with one goal in mind, freedom. I certainly don’t consider it to be a Civil War book! On the other hand, it’s still a great review! Your Thoughts?

Hello All, I was recently listening to NPR this morning and a few days ago. It appears that Amazon.com is having a big year this year selling ebooks. According to Amazon, for every 100 hardcover book they sold 168 ebooks. (I think I'm quoting the number correctly) But, another report I heard stated that they are going to be adding pictures and music to the ebooks, in order to give the readers a little something extra to make the ebook more marketable. When it reaches that stage, I might seriously be tempted to get one. Really, I would like to get one now. I looked at the Barnes and Noble nook eBook. I'm impressed with it. I would have preferred a big scre…

I’m huddled in the broom closet in the kitchen, scared for my life. I hear these footsteps, but they only last for a few seconds before there’s silence again. This is the worst part, I think—the silence. Because we have a really long hallway leading o the front door, and those five or six footsteps are not nearly enough to lead that robber out of the apartment. And although I picked up the butcher knife before jumping into the broom closet, I’m not too confident. Even if I could surprise him and maybe get a whack at him or something, the way my hands are shaking, I’m not so sure I’d do him any harm. I shut my eyes and make a promise to God that if he lets me live, I w…

  13. This interview originally aired on May 25, 2010. Today, 4 years later, my opinions about Facebook have changed, becoming less favorable. Fours years ago you could reach many of your "fans," on Facebook, by simply posting a link to your website. Today with almost three times as many "fans" I do not have the same level of engagement when posting links to my website. Even buying an advertisement (a small $20 ad) does not yield the same reach I could get four years ago with 1/3 the "followers." It is clear that Facebook has diminished engagement for content containing links pointing to external website. This is based upon years of collecting data and careful…

My novel "The New Breed Reparations Sanctuary" suggests that massive payments of reparations would first require a nation-wide Petition for African American Reparations and Limited Self-Governance (as recited in the opening prologue and which mirrors the American Declaration of Independence). Remember, this is speculative fiction. What do you think? Would Biden or Trump be compelled to accept such a radical plan (which would establish black-controlled cities/territories within the US)?

Toni Morrison lived to be 88. She had a tremendously successful and, I trust happy, life. Today I received a lot of email from friends informing me of Morrison's passing describing it as "sad" and even "horrible." I understand the permanent loss of anyone, especially someone so talented, is sad, but Morrison's transition is the culmination of a life well lived, a life worth celebrating. We all should be so blessed. R.I.P. Toni Morrison

"Crossroads: Women Coming of Age in Today's Uganda" is a fascinating collection of 15 true, autobiographical essays in which modern African women explore how they are balancing the effects of traditional African culture with their own aspirations as modern women. The elegant-written stories cover a wide range of issues, but all are inspiring. "The Triangle" is a historical novel focusing on the time during the late 1880s when the land that would become modern day Uganda, is about to lose its independence to British colonialist…
