5 Things Writers Must Do To Survive Online Let me know what you think about the above article by posting here or on my blog. My thesis is that we are giving up too much to big websites like Amazon/FaceBook/Google and get too little in return. The imbalance it growing increasingly worse... At this rate books, for example, will only be available for purchase from Amazon -- they already control 60% of all book sales not even B&N comes close. The Facebook will be the World Wide Web, at least that is where most people will spend most of their time and Google will control access to what little online content that is left, that they don't directly contr…

Cranky Old Man What do you see nurses? . . .. . .What do you see? What are you thinking .. . when you're looking at me? A cranky old man, . . . . . .not very wise, Uncertain of habit .. . . . . . . .. with faraway eyes? Who dribbles his food .. . ... . . and makes no reply. When you say in a loud voice . .'I do wish you'd try!' Who seems not to notice . . .the things that you do. And forever is losing . . . . . .. . . A sock or shoe? Who, resisting or not . . . ... lets you do as you will, With bathing and feeding . . . .The long day to fill? Is that what you're thinking?. .Is that what you see? This question was posted on Facebook. I have a policy of not materially participating in conversations on Facebook, because this activity takes away from activity on indie sites and enriches Facebook. In this case, I made an exception, but I also decided to share my comments here. "I have one but it doesn't get a lot of attention no matter what I do. So I seldom post on there anymore. I just keep it up for random visitors." --Barbara Barbara, I guess that depends on how you define "working for you." Many people consider the page successful if they get a lot of likes and shares. That is because Facebook is their primary web presence (a terrible move in my opinio…

I attended the Harlem Book Fair, this past saturday. Being a Harlem resident and the owner of the largest website dedicated to Black books, one would think that would be a no-brainer, but it is not, and that is a story for another day. Anyhow, I decided to go to the book fair and speak to all of the street vendors. I did not leave myself enough time so I only got to about 3/4 of them. One of the people I spoke to, much longer than most, was the author of the article above. He is in my age range (one of the few on the street that day who was), and he has been involved in the book world for a longtime, so we actually had a lot to talk about. In fact, he wrote about our …

As part of the website upgrade, I'm greatly expanding the information on Book Clubs. In fact, I would like AALBC.com to be thought of as the "Book Club of Book Clubs" or maybe the "Book Club for Book Clubs." I'll sort the tag line out later, the most important thing is what is being added to the web. I have about 650 book clubs on AALBC.com. You can find a book club near you here: http://aalbc.org/bookclubs/ I plan to add the reading lists of as many book clubs as possible. I just added Go On Girl! Book Club's reading list: http://aalbc.it/goongirl2016 Also, all commissions earned from sales of books on the Go On Girl! Book Club's reading list will…

Hello AALBC! I wanted to let everybody know that the 2nd and 3rd books in my Underground Railroad fiction series are now available. You can find "A War Below: Hunt" and "A War Below: Pay" on Amazon, Apple and Barnes and Noble. MORE IMPORTANTLY: I'd like to let you know that 100% of net sales from the first three books in the series are going to three different charities: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Wounded Warrior Project and Help-Portrait. The AALBC was one of the biggest sources of visitors to my website when I released the first book in the series "A War Below: Run". To all of you that purchased the first book before I made the announcement re…

This book recommendation is courtesy of our friends at The Museum of UnCut Funk Blaxploitation Cinema: The Essential Reference Guide Dazzling, highly stylized, excessively violent and brimming with sex, Blaxploitation films enjoyed a brief and memorable moment in motion picture history -- and never before or since - have so many African American performers been featured in starring roles. Twenty-five years after they first thrilled audiences, Blaxploitation films are enjoying a robust renaissance. The genre, with its bevy of colorful, contemporary characters, irresistible soundtracks and catchy titles, has taken its rightful place among the entertainment industry'…

My buddy, Ron Kavanaugh, who runs the Literary Freedom Project, has just launched a Kickstarter campaign for his upcoming literary conference. Support Mosaic Literary Conferences’s Fundraiser Ron actually started a website dedicated to Black book before AALBC.com launched. He discontinued his website in 2014, for all the reasons reason I've lamented over the years. We met each other back in 1998 at a now defunct bookstore Nkiru Books in Brooklyn. One of the store's booksellers introduced us, because he was aware of both of our websites. Ron actually went to the same high school and graduated the same year I did,…

Hello All, I just finished up reading the John Oliver Killens biography by Keith Gilyard, which was wonderful by the way! Now, I'm going to go on a Winter Wonderland reading vacation. Actually, I've already started. I read Breakfast at Tiffany by Truman Capote this morning. I like it A LOT BETTER than the movie. Strangely enough, I saw Holly Golightly more like Marilyn Monroe than Audrey Hepburn. Capote was a damn good writer. I have two new installments for my two favorite children lit series on the way, Artemis Fowl and The Last Apprentice. Then I'm going to read for the first time an author name John Dos Passos. I have never heard of the man before. His …

Read the full article that the The National Law Review The self-publishing vendors (i.e., Amazon’s Kindle Digital Publishing, Barnes & Noble Nook Press and Smashwords) sought summary judgment asserting that they were not publishers of the book but merely allowed the author to use their systems to distribute it, and that were protected from any liability for third-party content by CDA Section 230. In opposing dismissal, the plaintiffs argued that the vendors worked in concert with the author to provide a platform for publishing books the same way a traditional publishing house does. Siding with the defendants, the court dismissed the claims against the self-p…

Lee E. Meadows, Ph.D interviewed many authors in the late 90's on his “The Book Beat” radio program, which broadcast on Detroit’s WPON 1460 AM. Some of the interviews he did are archived in AALBC.com and include: Evelyn Coleman, J. California Cooper, Eric Jerome Dickey, Tananarive Due, Lolita Files, Linda Dominique Grosvenor, Hunter Hayes, William July II, Renee Killingsworth, Lisa Saxton, Camika C. Spencer, Roger M. Davis, Delores Thornton, and Omar Tyree. Lee used to send me audio cassettes of each interview and I would convert them into Real Audio files. Back in the 1990's Real Audio was one of the most popular ways to deliver audio content on the web, but t…

Yesterday I sent an email to my subscribers promoting Iyanla Vanzant's latest book. Iyanla was the first bestselling authors on AALBC.com. She is one of 2 or 3 authors who has been bestselling author on AALBC.com in both 998 and 2015. I've seen her in action a few times and she strikes me as down to earth, regular--despite her fame. After I send an email I just get feedback from folks, usually thanking me for the information. Below is a message, typical of one I usually receive, in reaction to the Iyanla mailing: “I knew nothing about it. And I love Iyanla! I have at least three of her books.” Here a two message on the other side of the spectr…

Before I go into the segment I will speak on Stageplays + screenplays. One of the things I like about stageplays or screenplays is they are made to be performed. Which means what? They are meant to be the basis of a collective art work. A book of fiction is meant to be read but not performed. That simple variance , in my mind, opens up stageplays or screenplays to a different set of allowable judgements. The best example I can think of showing the power of screenplay fluidity is "THe Jungle" from "The Twilight Zone" . In the original short story from Charles Beaumont it is located in Africa and in the future with a technologically advanced manner. The ch…

Trooooooy. No sooner do I resign myself to doing without the "edit" option which you have taken away from posters, than you discontinue the "sign out" option which allowed members to get a lurker's view of the proceedings on the board. Rather than making things simpler, you have made them more restrictive. You may call this fine-tuning, but I call it stifling! Excuse me while I go somewhere and sulk. Humph.

DRM Lawsuit Filed By Independent Bookstores Against Amazon, 'Big Six' Publishers Three independent bookstores are taking Amazon and the so-called Big Six publishers (Random House, Penguin, Hachette, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster and Macmillan) to court in an attempt to level the playing field for book retailers. If successful, the lawsuit could completely change how ebooks are sold. The class-action complaint, filed in New York on Feb 15., claims that by entering into confidential agreements with the Big Six publishers, who control approximately 60 percent of print book revenue in the U.S., Amazon has created a monopoly in the marketplace that is designed …

Here is the idea: It could be financed by a collective of authors, small press and bookstores to run a test on this idea. Maybe Troy could afford to try it from his location under aalbc as the vendor. We'll need a digital vending machine able to store MP3 files and Pdf or epub files, either full copies or samples of audio books or ebooks that customers can download into their iphones, ipads or labtops using a usb storage device. It may be better, cheaper, safer, to use a sample rather than have a vending machines that takes money because you'll need to service it and maybe those cost more. These can be placed in places where people are most likely to read, Barber…
